Cal Opens Unbeaten on Day 1 at Regional
STANFORD, Calif. – California won all of its matches in singles and doubles on the first day of the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Friday at Stanford's Taube Family Tennis Stadium. Seven Golden Bears and four Cal duos reached the doubles round of 32, with two teams advancing via first-round byes.
“We were undefeated today,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “I don't know if that's ever happened before for us.”
All five of Cal's seeded players in singles – top-seeded Lynn Chi, third-seeded Zsofi Susanyi, fifth-seeded Maegan Manasse, sixth-seeded Denise Starr and ninth-seeded Klara Fabikova – along with unseeded senior Cecilia Estlander and freshman Karla Popovic won on Friday.
After an opening round of 128 bye, Chi, a junior ranked eighth in the nation, beat San Jose State's Marie Klocker, 6-1, 6-1. Susanyi, a senior ranked 16th, also had a bye and then knocked off Washington State's Nastia Vasyukhina, 6-0, 6-1, in the round of 64.
In other round of 64 results, the 25th-ranked Starr beat San Jose State's Julianna Bacelar, 6-2, 7-5, the 43rd-ranked Manasse defeated topped Gonzaga's Alexandra Bourguignon, 6-2, 6-1, the 60th-ranked Fabikova moved past Oregon's Alysa Tobita, 6-3, 6-0, Estlander beat Pacific's Iveta Maserova, 6-2, 6-1, and Popovic defeated Washington State's Victoria Matejevic, 6-2, 6-0.
Estlander had a notable round of 128 victory, as she upset 16th-seeded Jamie Pawid of Saint Mary's, 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-3.
In doubles, the top-seeded pair of Starr and Manasse and the third-seeded team of Fabikova and Susanyi earned round of 64 byes to reach Saturday's second round. Seeded seventh, the team of Chi and Popovic won its opening round of 64 match against Oregon's Allie Hueffner/Lina Akesson, 8-5, while unseeded Bears Estlander and freshman Lyann Hoang defeated Claire Meunier/Leilani Tice of UC Davis, 8-1 in the first round.
“Doubles wise, we had some new partnerships with Cessi and Lyann and Lynn and Karla,” Augustus said. “It was nice to see them get their first wins together as pairs, see them play well and see them use some of the stuff we're working on in practice. We got off to a good start after the doubles. In singles, Cessi's win over Jamie Pawid in three sets was a big win for her. Everybody won convincingly either in the first or second round or in both rounds today.”
