LOS ANGELES – The California Golden Bears went seven for seven and did not lose a set on Tuesday as they opened play at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Cal won all six of its matches in qualifying singles and its lone doubles match in qualifying doubles to advance to play on Wednesday.
In the qualifying singles first round, 25th-ranked and fifth-seeded sophomore Denise Starr went to two tiebreakers against Utah State's McKenzie Davis but prevailed, 7-6(3), 7-6(0). Sophomore Maegan Manasse, ranked 43rd, defeated Virginia Tech's 64th-ranked Illinca Stoica, 6-2, 6-3. Klara Fabikova, Cal's 60th-ranked junior, upset TCU's 31st-ranked Stefanie Tan – seeded Nos. 9-16 – 6-3, 6-3.
In the second round, Starr topped Alabama's 52nd-ranked Danielle Spielmann, 7-6(5), 6-2, Manasse knocked off Florida's 51st-ranked Kourtney Keegan, 6-1, 6-1, and Fabikova topped Florida State's Daneika Borthwick, 6-4, 7-6(6).
The 31st-ranked and sixth-seeded team of senior Zsofi Susanyi and junior Lynn Chi won its first match in qualifying doubles, dispatching the 45th-ranked Clemson duo of Romy Kölzer and Tristen Dewar, 6-3, 6-3. The Bears will play UCLA's 56th-ranked Chanelle Van Nguyen and Terri Fleming in Wednesday's second round.
Eight players will advance to main draw singles out of qualifying, while four teams will move out of qualifying doubles to the main draw. Both the singles and doubles main draws are slated to run from Thursday through Sunday at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, California.
Main draw singles semifinalists, main draw doubles finalists and main draw consolation champions will receive automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 6-9 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.
