California's Chase Melton won twice in singles and the Golden Bears produced a 3-5 overall record on Saturday at the Olympia Fields Country Club Fighting Illini Invitational. The Bears played two rounds of singles on the second day of the clay-court event hosted by Illinois.
In the second round of singles at Olympia Fields, Melton, a sophomore, defeated Notre Dame's Michael Moore, 7-6 (1), 6-3, and topped Utah's Ben Chen in the third round, 6-5, 6-3.
Two other Bears also faced Utes, with junior Campbell Johnson falling to Utah's No. 99 David Holiner, 6-4, 6-4, and sophomore Andrew Scholnick dropping his match against Utah's Alex Hilliard, 6-4, 6-2. Scholnick split on the day, beating Pepperdine's David Sofaer, 6-4, 4-6, (12-10).
Johnson drew Illinois' Jared Hiltzik in his second match and fell, 6-4, 6-0. Cal sophomore Gregory Bayane dropped two matches, to No. 3 Sebastian Fanselow of Pepperdine, 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-2, and Illinois' Stephen Hoh, 6-2, 6-1.
The three-day event concludes on Sunday starting at 9 a.m. CT/7 a.m. PT with round three of doubles and round four of singles.
