A contingent of Golden Bears opened the fall season by producing a 4-0 singles record and 1-3 doubles record on Friday at the Olympia Fields Country Club Fighting Illini Invitational. Junior Campbell Johnson and sophomore Chase Melton each won a singles match and paired to capture California's lone doubles win on the first day of the three-day tournament.
The Bears were perfect in singles, as Johnson defeated No. 24 Greg Andrews of Notre Dame, 7-6 (6), 3-6, 7-6 (5); sophomore Gregory Bayane topped Illinois' Tim Kopinski, 6-3, 6-2; Melton beat Kentucky's Brett Johnson, 6-0, 4-6, 6-3; and sophomore Andrew Scholnick defeated Pepperdine's Damian Gryzelko, 6-3, 3-6, (10-7).
After dropping their round one doubles match to Utah's Ben Chen and Alex Hilliard, 8-4, Johnson and Melton downed Notre Dame's Blas Moro and Michael Moore, 8-3, in round two.
Scholnick and Bayane lost their two doubles matches to two different pairs of Illini, falling 8-3 to Jared Hiltzik and Farris Gosea and then dropping an 8-5 result to Brian Page/Stephen Hoh.
Day two of the Olympia Fields Country Club Invitational continues on Saturday, starting at 9 a.m. CT/7 a.m. PT.
