The top-ranked California women's rowing team continued the NCAA Championships Saturday at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J., with all three boats advancing to the grand finals. Cal is one of only three teams (Princeton, Virginia) to have all its boats in the A grand finals. For the second straight day, the Golden Bears' junior varsity eight and varsity four boats picked up heat victories.
In the varsity four, the Golden Bears garnered the win with a time of 7:09.66 to second-place Yale's 7:10.81. Washington came in third at 7:11.25. Cal boasted the second-best time in the semifinal heats. Ohio State posted the day's top time in its heat at 7:05.52. The Bears' varsity four boat, which improved on its time from Friday by 10 seconds, has a chance to finish the 2012 season undefeated with a win in Sunday's grand final.
The varsity eight took third in its heat with Virginia beating the Bears to the finish line at 6:13.35 and Pac-12 foe USC taking second (6:17.48). Cal crossed the finish line at 6:19.04. The Cavaliers' time was the best in both semifinal heats. Despite finishing third, Cal still advances into the A grand final on Sunday.
In the junior varsity eight, the Bears took first in the heat, clocking a time of 6:30.58, with Princeton and Virginia following in second and third, respectively. Michigan garnered the top time in the other semifinal race at 6:29.71.
The national championships conclude with the grand finals on Sunday.
