ATHENS, Ga. - 13th-ranked California women's tennis freshman Zsofi Susanyi rewrote the record books on Saturday, May 26, as she became the first-ever Golden Bear freshman to reach the singles semifinals in the NCAA Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Susanyi earned her seventh straight victory without dropping a set and will face the tournament's fifth seed in the semis on Sunday, May 27.
Day four at the 2012 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships didn't go quite as well for the defending singles champion as eighth-ranked senior Jana Juricova was eliminated in the quarterfinals by third-ranked and third-seeded Nicole Gibbs of Stanford. Juricova fell, 6-2, 7-5, to her Cardinal rival and completes the season with a 30-7 singles record.
Cal's 15th-ranked doubles team of Juricova and Susanyi was also eliminated from play on Saturday as the duo fell, 6-1, 6-3, to Georgia's 27th-ranked duo of Nadja Gilchrist and Chelsey Gullickson. The Bear pair finishes the year with 21-4 mark.
"Today probably didn't go the way she [Juricova] wanted," said Head Coach Amanda Augustus. "Even so, I think her accomplishments both on the court and in the classroom speak for themselves. She's got one of the highest GPAs of all the student-athletes in our program's history and she has such great sportsmanship and such class for a player. In the moment, right now, it's hard to say, but I think when we look back on all of her accomplishments, it's definitely going to be hall of fame worthy career in a few years."
In the singles quarterfinals, Susanyi faced USC's 26th-ranked freshman Sabrina Santamaria for the first time. Susanyi walked away with her seventh consecutive straight-set victory as she took out the Trojan, 6-2, 7-6, with a 7-4 score in the second-set tiebreaker.
Susanyi will have to face Stanford's fifth-ranked and fifth-seeded senior Mallory Burdette in the semifinals. She faced Burdette twice within one week in late April and fell in each of those matches. The first was a 6-2, 6-4 loss on April 21 in the Cal-Stanford dual. The second was a 7-6, 6-2 loss in the quarterfinals of the Pac-12 singles championships on April 27. Susanyi and Burdette will take the court for the their semifinal match at 9 a.m. PT (noon local).
On the other side of the singles bracket in the other semifinal match, Stanford's Gibbs and Florida's top-ranked and top-seeded Allie Will play at 9 a.m. PT.
"I'm very excited to have one of our freshmen in the semifinals," said Augustus. "With two Stanford players also in the semis, I think it speaks a lot to the strength of our conference and all the tough matches that she's [Susanyi] had to work her way through, all season. Zsofi is just playing really smart tennis right now and it has been exciting to see her develop as a player. We're going to go out there and give it our best, tomorrow. She's been kind of waiting to have another opportunity against [Mallory] Burdette so it's going to be great tennis. Burdette is playing well right now, but so is Zsofi. I hope all of the fans at home follow online and I'm looking forward to a great day for the Bears, tomorrow."
