ATHENS, Ga. - The California women's tennis team was undefeated on the second day of the 2012 NCAA Division I Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Each of the Golden Bears' two singles players and two doubles teams earned victories to advance to the round of 16 on Thursday, May 24.

Eighth-ranked senior Jana Juricova ran her streak to eight straight sets as she posted a 6-4, 6-1 win over No. 56-ranked Sona Novakova of Baylor. Seeded sixth, the defending singles champion now draws 40th-ranked Aeriel Ellis of Texas in the round of 16. She defeated Ellis in three sets in the semifinals of the 2010 ITA Indoor Championships, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4; their only previous meeting.

13th-ranked freshman Zsofi Susanyi won her fifth straight singles match in a 6-0, 7-5 victory against No. 24 Mary Anne Macfarlane of Alabama. It was her team-leading 39th singles win of the year. On her side of the bracket, Susanyi runs into fourth-seeded and No. 4-ranked Robin Anderson of UCLA. In their only previous meeting, Susanyi came out on top, 6-3, 6-4, against a sixth-ranked Anderson in a freshman-versus-freshman bout on Feb. 24 at UCLA's home courts.

Each Cal pair advanced out of the round of 32 as doubles matches opened in the afternoon. The Bears' fifth-ranked team of junior Annie Goransson and sophomore Anett Schutting needed a third-set tiebreaker in their match against Duke's 21st-ranked team of Mary Clayton and Ester Goldfield, but they came away with their 33rd win of the year, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6, with a 9-7 score in the tiebreaker.

Cal's 15th-ranked tandem of Juricova and Susanyi fought off Mississippi's seventh-ranked team of Kristi Boxx and Abby Guthrie in their first-round match, 7-6, 6-4, but needed a 7-3 win in the first-set tiebreaker to do so. It was the pair's 20th doubles win of the year; second on the team behind Goransson and Schutting's 33.

Goransson and Schutting will face Florida's 22nd-ranked duo of Lauren Embree and Joanna Mather in the round of 16 and Juricova and Susanyi draw Vanderbilt's 30th-ranked team of Lauren Mira and Jackie Wu. All match times for matches on May 25 will be determined following the completion of today's matches.
