ATHENS, Ga. - The sixth-ranked California men's doubles team of senior Nick Andrews and junior Christoffer Konigsfeldt earned a three-set victory in the opening round of the 2012 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships on Thursday, May 24, at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The Golden Bears advance to the round of 16 to face a familiar for in Texas Tech's 18th-ranked duo of Raony Carvalho and Gonzalo Escobar.
Andrews and Konigsfeldt earned their 22nd victory together, this season, with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 victory over New Mexico's 65th-ranked team of Phillip Anderson and Jadon Phillips in the round of 32.
The Bear pair will face a Texas Tech tandem that they saw just two weeks ago. Cal hosted the Red Raiders on May 13 in the second round of the NCAA team championship. In that dual, the Bears secured the doubles point with wins on the bottom two courts. At the top, Andrews and Konigsfeldt had fought Carvalho and Escobar, tooth and nail, to a seven-all tie when play was suspended. The two teams will see each other again in the round of 16 at 11 a.m. PT (2 p.m. local) on Friday, May 25.
Andrews and Konigsfeldt have seen Escobar two other times as parts of two different doubles teams, but will only be facing this matchup for the second time. With four more wins, the Bears can become the first Cal pair to win the NCAA title since Matt Lucena and Bent-Ove Pedersen secured the crown in 1991.
