ATHENS, Ga. - Each of the California men's tennis team's singles representatives were eliminated in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on Wednesday, May 23. The Golden Bears' sixth-ranked doubles team of senior Nick Andrews and junior Christoffer Konigsfeldt will open the round of 32 on Thursday, May 24.
Cal's 37th-ranked sophomore Ben McLachlan couldn't escape the clutches of Mississippi State's 13th-ranked Artem Ilyushin who won, 6-1, 6-3. Ilyushin is one of the tournament's eight 9-16 seeded players. An All-Pac-12 second-team selection, McLachlan completes the year with a team-high 26 singles wins and shares team-high honors with 28 doubles wins.
For 58th-ranked Andrews, a thrilling three-set finish went the other way as Mississippi State's 56th-ranked George Coupland earned a 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 win with a 9-7 score in the second-set tiebreaker. Andrews completes the year with 15 singles victories.
Doubles play opens on Thursday, May 24. Andrews and Konigsfeldt will face New Mexico's 65th-ranked duo of Phillip Anderson and Jadon Phillips in a 1:30 p.m. PT match (4:30 p.m. local). The Bears were also in last year's NCAA championships but were eliminated in the first round. This year, they can become the first Cal pair to win the NCAA title since Matt Lucena and Bent-Ove Pedersen secured the crown in 1991.
