ATHENS, Ga. - Eighth-ranked California women's tennis senior Jana Juricova carried her six seed into the second round of the 2012 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Singles Championships on Wednesday, May 23, at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The defending NCAA title holder moved one step closer to a second crown with a 6-3, 6-1 win over 20th-ranked Kate Turvy of Northwestern in the round of 64.

13th-ranked freshman Zsofi Susanyi followed Juricova into the second round with her fourth straight win; her team-leading 38th of the season. Susanyi padded her already impressive first-year resume with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over 47th-ranked Mary Weatherholt of Nebraska.

Juricova will face 56th-ranked Sona Novakova of Baylor in the round of 32 at 7 a.m. PT (10 a.m. local) and Susanyi draws 24th-ranked Mary Anne Macfarlane of Alabama in an 8 a.m. PT match (11 a.m. local).

Cal's two other singles players couldn't advance out of the first round. 30th-ranked sophomore Anett Schutting fell, 6-1, 6-4, to 43rd-ranked Lindsey Hardenbergh of Virginia, and 48th-ranked junior Tayler Davis dropped a 7-5, 6-1 decision to 31st-ranked Joelle Kissell of North Carolina State.

Doubles matches open with round-of-32 action on Thursday. Cal's fifth-ranked team of Schutting and junior Annie Goransson hold one of four 5-8 seeds and will open the tournament against Duke's 21st-ranked team of Mary Clayton and Ester Goldfield at 11:30 a.m. PT (2:30 p.m. local). On the other side of the doubles bracket, the Bears' 15th-ranked tandem of Juricova and Susanyi open up against Mississippi's seventh-ranked duo of Kristi Boxx and Abby Guthrie at 1 p.m. PT (4 p.m. local).
