ATHENS, Ga. - The ninth-seeded California women's tennis team (20-7) fell, 4-1, to No. 1-ranked and top-seeded UCLA (25-2) in the quarterfinal round of the 2012 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships on the Henry Feild Courts of the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on Saturday, May 19. The Golden Bears were in their 20th national quarterfinal but fell short against a Bruin squad that they had beaten in the regular season.
Cal dropped the doubles point for just the fifth time this season as UCLA came up with 8-4 victories on the bottom two courts. McCall Jones and Carling Seguso earned the first win of the day on court three where the Bruin pair took out sophomore Alice Duranteau and freshman Cecilia Estlander.
At the top court, the Bears' 15th-ranked duo of senior Jana Juricova and freshman Zsofi Susanyi built a 7-5 lead against the sixth-ranked tandem of Robin Anderson and Skylar Morton, but had their match cut short when the doubles point was clinched at court two.
On No. 2 doubles, UCLA's Courtney Dolehide and Pamela Montez fought off Cal's fifth-ranked team of junior Annie Goransson and sophomore Anett Schutting to earn an 8-4 win and secure the first point of the dual.
Though it was the Bears that needed four singles victories, the Bruins turned the tables and got four first-set wins on courts three through six. At the top, eighth-ranked Juricova earned a 6-4 win in her first set against No. 4 Anderson. One court down, 13th-ranked Susanyi took a 6-2 win over No. 98 Jones.
Down, 5-3, in her second set, 48th-ranked junior Tayler Davis fought back to get one game against No. 124 Morton, but couldn't force a third set as she was turned away, 6-4. Morton's 6-1, 6-4 win put UCLA ahead, 2-0.
Moments later, the Bears had a response when Susanyi polished off her team-leading 37th singles victory with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Jones at No. 2 singles. The win put the Bears on the board down, 2-1, but UCLA claimed a 3-1 lead with a win on court six. There, Duranteau fell, 6-2, to Seguso, in the first set, but had fought her way to within a game and had a deuce point. Unfortunately, Seguso came up with enough points to seal a 6-2, 6-4 win and put the Bruins within a point of claiming the match.
At the top court, Juricova had capitalized on her first-set win against Anderson and held a 5-2 lead in the second set, but UCLA had different plans down at courts three and five. At No. 5 singles, No. 119 Chanelle Van Nguyen shocked No. 67 Goransson with a 6-1 win in their first set and had built a 5-0 lead in the second. With the sixth game locked at deuce, Goransson replied to reel off a pair of wins and close to within 5-2.
On court three, No. 73 Montez defeated No. 30 Schutting, 6-3, in the first set and was fighting a Schutting comeback in the second set. Down, 5-4, Schutting had a chance to force a third set, but Montez slammed the door on a Cal comeback when she closed out a 6-3, 6-4 win to give the Bruins their fourth point in a 4-1 win.
With the match decided, Juricova's match was suspended while she led Robinson, 6-4, 5-2. Goransson's comeback bid was also stopped as she trailed Van Nguyen, 6-1, 5-2, on court five.
The Bears will now turn their attention to the singles and doubles championships. Juricova, Susanyi, Davis, and Schutting will each play in the singles tournament. Cal's top two doubles teams of Juricova and Susanyi and Schutting and Goransson will be entered into the doubles tournament. Goransson is also a designated alternate for the singles draw should another player withdraw.
