ATHENS, Ga. - The 14th-seeded California men's tennis team (14-12) fell, 4-0, to third-seeded and No. 2-ranked Virginia (27-1) in the round of 16 of the 2012 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships on the Henry Feild Courts of the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on Friday, May 18. The Golden Bears had advanced to the round of 16 for the sixth time under Head Coach Peter Wright and were facing 2011 NCAA runner-up Virginia for the first time in program history.
The Cavaliers grabbed the first point of the day as winners on the top and bottom doubles courts. Each match finished with an 8-3 count in favor of Virginia.
At court three, Alex Domijan and Mitchell Frank defeated the Bears' freshman duo of Gregory Bayane and Andrew Scholnick, first. Then, at the top court, the Cavaliers' fifth-ranked team of Drew Courtney and Jarmere Jenkins clinched the point with a victory against Cal's sixth-ranked team of senior Nick Andrews and junior Christoffer Konigsfeldt.
Julen Uriguen and Justin Shane held a 7-3 lead over the Bears' 66th-ranked pair of senior Carlos Cueto and sophomore Ben McLachlan, but had their match stopped when the doubles point was clinched.
Virginia won first sets on all but one singles court. At the top, fourth-ranked Jenkins earned a 6-3 win in his first set against No. 37 Ben McLachlan, but the second-year Bear put up a fight in the second and had held serve to a three-all tie.
One court over, 39th-ranked Domijan turned his 6-1 first-set win against No. 58 Andrews into a 2-0 lead for the Cavaliers when he wrapped up a 6-3 results in the second set.
Down on court six, Riki McLachlan had fought his way to a three-all tie in a first-set tiebreaker with Uriguen. Uriguen took a brief 5-3 lead before McLachlan wrestled his way back into a tie at six-all. Meanwhile, at No. 4 singles, Konigsfeldt turned a 6-2 loss in his first set to Courtney and held a 5-4 lead in the second set.
The Cavaliers continued to press and came up with a 3-0 lead in the dual when No. 82-ranked Shane put a second 6-1, 6-3 score in the books with a win against Bayane on court five.
Konigsfeldt forced a third set against Courtney when he earned a 6-4 win in the second set and had taken a 1-0 lead in the third, but down on court six, Riki McLachlan was edged in his first-set tiebreaker, 9-7. Back on the top court, Ben McLachlan had made some headway into splitting his match with Jenkins as he grabbed a 6-5 lead in the second set, but Frank put an end to Cal's hopes when he closed the door with a 6-4, 6-4 win over 70th-ranked Cueto on court three.
Riki McLachlan was down, 2-0, to Uriguen in his second set, and Konigsfeldt was up, 3-2, in his third set, but play was stopped when Frank clinched the fourth point for the Cavaliers.
Virginia will face the winner of a dual between Stanford and Kentucky in the quarterfinals. Several Bears will now turn their attention to the NCAA singles and doubles championships. Andrews and Ben McLachlan will each play in the singles tournament while Cal's team of Andrews and Konigsfeldt has a place among the 32 teams that will compete for the doubles crown. Draws will be completed next week. Please visit NCAA.com for more information.
