BERKELEY - The 12th-ranked California men's tennis team (10-7, 3-0 Pac-12) made mush out of No. 22 Washington (12-6, 0-3) with a 7-0 win on Friday, April 6, at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The Golden Bears had not played a home match in more than a month but have now won three straight matches since the start of conference play.
"It was good to be home," said head coach Peter Wright. "It's been a long time since we've been here, and we play well here. It's that time of year when we've really got to be playing high-quality tennis, and I think we did that across the board, today; in singles and in doubles. We still have a lot of work to do with, Oregon coming in tomorrow. That is a good team with a lot of good players, but at the end of the day, this is a good way to start the weekend off."
The Bears picked up their 12th double point this year as they swept all three doubles courts. At the top, Cal's third-ranked team of senior Nick Andrews and junior Christoffer Konigsfeldt upended Emmett Egger and Kyle McMorrow in an 8-3 decision to kick-start the day. It was sixth win in a row for the Bears and their 18th overall.
On court two, the 33rd-ranked tandem of junior Carlos Cueto and sophomore Ben McLachlan earned their 22nd win together and moved to 10-2 in dual matches as they took out Marton Bots and Matt Stith, 8-4, to clinch the doubles point for the Bears.
At No. 3 doubles, freshmen Gregory Bayane and Andrew Scholnick fell behind by two breaks, 5-2, to Jeff Hawke and Max Manthou, but the Bears battled back to force a seven-all tie and send the match into a tiebreaker. The Huskies came up with a 3-2 lead in the breaker, but the Cal duo made another run to hold the dogs at bay and close out a 7-3 win for a three-court sweep of the doubles matches. The Bears hold a 9-0 mark in Pac-12 dual doubles matches, this season.
The Bears went ahead, 2-0, in the match thanks to a quick 6-2, 6-2 win on court three where No. 39-ranked Cueto bid farewell to a five-match slump to knock off Bots. It was Cueto's 10th win of the year to make him the third Bear to reach double digits in singles wins.
At the top court, 76th-ranked Andrews ran his winning streak to three matches as he produced the same score to take out No. 14-ranked McMorrow and lift the Bears to a 3-0 lead in the dual.
Three matches finished, minutes apart, to send the dual through a flurry of action. When the dust settled, the Bears held a 6-0 lead with just court five awaiting a decision. At No. 2 singles, No. 37-ranked Ben McLachlan finished off Egger, 6-4, 6-1, to clinch the victory for the Bears. It was McLachlan's fifth singles win in a row and gave him 10 wins in dual matches.
"It was a great win for us, today," said McLachlan. "I'm really happy that we beat them, 7-0. Last year, in Washington, it was a really tough match that we lost, 4-3, so it was nice to get some revenge."
Only seconds later, Konigsfeldt completed his 6-3, 6-3 victory over Manthou at court four to give Cal its fifth point of the dual. In the blink of an eye, the Bears tacked up a 6-0 score when junior Riki McLachlan earned his third straight win with a 6-4, 6-2 decision against Nicholas Kamisar, at court six.
In the last match off the courts, Bayane and Viktor Farkas went the distance in a three-setter that included a match tiebreaker. Bayane won his first set, 7-6, with a 7-4 score in the tiebreaker, but had the tables turned on him when Farkas claimed the second set's tiebreaker, 7-1. Bayane showed his mettle in the match tiebreaker as he built an 8-1 lead, the last point of which came on a service ace. Bayane gave up just one more point as he completed the 7-0 sweep for the Bears with a 10-2 win in the tiebreaker. It was Bayane's third victory in a row and made him the fourth player to reach 10 singles wins, this season. He is now 10-4 overall.
Cal hosts No. 62 Oregon (14-4, 0-3 Pac-12) on Saturday, April 7, at 11 a.m. PT. The Bears will celebrate the life and career of Jim McManus in ceremonies between doubles and singles matches. A youth tennis clinic will be offered in the morning, and Fuddruckers will provide food to the first 500 fans in attendance as a part of McManus Legends Day at Berkeley.
