Pac-12 Championship Central

OJAI, Calif. - No. 96-ranked California women's tennis sophomore Anett Schutting pushed ahead and landed a spot in the Pac-12 Championships singles title match at Libbey Park on Saturday, April 28. Schutting becomes the first Golden Bear to advance to the conference final since All-American and NCAA champion Susie Babos in 2007. The last Cal player to capture the crown was Zsuzsanna Fodor in 2006.

The only non-Stanford player in the singles semifinals on the third day of play, Schutting emerged from a three-set match against third-seeded and No. 5-ranked Mallory Burdette to claim a spot in the championship match. Burdette won the first set, 6-1, but Schutting answered with a 6-3 win in the second set. Her momentum put Burdette on her heels as the second-year Bear capped the victory with a 6-2 score in the third.

Schutting will draw the tournament's top seed in No. 3-ranked Nicole Gibbs for a 9:30 a.m. PT match on Sunday, April 29. Gibbs took out teammate No. 57-ranked Stacey Tan in her semifinal match.

In the doubles championship, Schutting and junior Annie Goransson carried their second seed into the semifinals but were eliminated there. The fifth-ranked Cal duo defeated Danielle Lao and Allison Ramos of USC, 9-8, with a 7-4 score in the tiebreaker to advance out of the quarterfinals, but were outplayed in the semis by the Trojans' third-seeded No. 4-ranked team of Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria who won, 8-1, to snap the Bears' 14-match winning streak.

Also in the doubles semifinals, the Bears' 18th-ranked team of senior Jana Juricova and freshman Zsofi Susanyi couldn't get past the top-seeded Stanford duo of Burdette and Gibbs as they fell, 8-5.

In the doubles invitational quarterfinals, junior Tayler Davis and freshman Laura Posylkin came up with an 8-3 win over Washington State's second-seeded team of Elizaveta Luzina and Luda Vasilieva to move into the semifinal round. There, the two Bears outlasted Oregon's tandem of Trudie du Toit and Julia Metzger to earn a spot in the title match where they will face Arizona's top-seeded team of Hailey Johnson and Sarah Landsman. The Bears and the Wildcats take the courts for an 11 a.m. bout on Sunday, April 29.

The last Cal duo to advance to the invitational doubles final was Rachael Dillon and Daron Moore in 2008 where they fell to a UCLA duo. The year before that, Bojana Bobusic and Claire Ilcinkas defeated Laila Abdala and Rebecca Rankin of Arizona State to capture the doubles invitational crown.
