Pac-12 Championship Central
OJAI, Calif. - After several rain delays, six members of the California women's tennis team advanced through the first round of the Pac-12 Championships at the Ojai Valley Tennis Club on Thursday, April 26. Five Golden Bears will play in the championship round of 16.
Due to the rain delays, only the first round of singles matches was played. As such, two rounds of singles are scheduled to be played on Friday, April 27. Play will continue with the first round of doubles matches in both the championship and invitational draws at 8 a.m. PT. Singles round of 16 matches will begin not before 10 a.m. and will be followed by quarterfinal matches no earlier than 3 p.m.
On Saturday, April 28, the revised schedule will require two rounds of doubles to be played prior to the women's semifinals in both draws. This slate of matches will be played, as originally planned, at Libbey Park.
Fourth-seeded No. 7-ranked senior Jana Juricova headlined Cal's first-day act with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Washington State's Ksenia Googe. It was her 25th win of the year and made her the fifth Bear to reach that plateau, this season. Juricova will move on to the round of 16 and face No. 57-ranked Stacey Tan of Stanford in a rematch of last year's NCAA singles championship.
Cal's fifth-seeded and 14th-ranked freshman Zsofi Susanyi won her 33rd match of the year in a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Wende Janssens of Colorado. She will advance to face 79th-ranked Natasha Marks of Arizona in the round of 16.
55th-ranked junior Tayler Davis earned her third straight singles win as she took out No. 108-ranked Elisabeth Fournier of Washington State, 6-2, 6-3. Davis will draw the top seed in the tournament in No. 3-ranked Nicole Gibbs of Stanford in her round of 16 match.
No. 83-ranked junior Annie Goransson completed a 6-0, 6-1 win over Colorado's Kristina Schleich for her 14th straight victory dating back to March 2; her 33rd overall. Goransson will turn around to face eighth-seeded 28th-ranked USC freshman Sabrina Santamaria in the round of 16.
96th-ranked sophomore Anett Schutting posted a 6-4, 6-2 win against 47th-ranked Lacey Smyth of Arizona to earn her 30th victory of the year. She becomes the third Bear to reach the 30-win mark, this season, and will draw the seventh seed in the round of 16; No. 17-ranked Danielle Lao of USC.
In the singles invitational draw, sophomore Alice Duranteau put up a 6-1, 6-2 score against Oregon's Rabea Stueckemann in the first round. Duranteau will move ahead to face the invitational's fifth-seed; Sarah Landsman of Arizona. Last year, Duranteau won the invitational as the fourth seed as she defeated Susan McRann of Arizona in the final.
This year, McRann used a three-set victory to upset top-seeded freshman Cecilia Estlander, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. Senior Stephany Chang was unable to advance out of the first round of the invitational draw as she fell, 6-0, 6-0, to sixth-seeded Valeria Pulido of USC.
