LOS ANGELES - The 12th-ranked California men's tennis team (11-9, 4-2 Pac-12) fell, 6-1, to top-ranked USC (25-0, 6-0) at the David X. Marks Tennis Stadium on Sunday, April 15. The Golden Bears will play host to No. 11 Stanford (14-6, 4-1) in their regular-season finale at the Hellman Tennis Complex on Friday, April 20, at 3 p.m. PT, during which Cal celebrates seniors Nick Andrews, Carlos Cueto, Ahmed Ismail, and Tommie Murphy as part of Senior Day festivities.
USC's win extended its winning streak to 45 dual matches as the Trojans continue to defend their three consecutive NCAA championships. USC swept the doubles courts to hoist the first point of the day. At the top court, the Trojans' 15th-ranked team of Steve Johnson and Roberto Quiroz set things off with an 8-3 win against Cal's third-ranked team of Andrews and junior Christoffer Konigsfeldt.
The Trojans secured the doubles point with a win at court two where their 20th-ranked duo of Daniel Nguyen and Ray Sarmiento earned an 8-4 victory over the Bears' 38th-ranked team of Cueto and sophomore Ben McLachlan. The Trojans completed the three-court sweep when Emilio Gomez and Yannick Hanfmann took out Cal's freshman pair of Gregory Bayane and Andrew Scholnick, 8-6.
USC's next point came from the top singles court where second-ranked Johnson upended No. 55 Andrews, 6-2, 6-2. No. 43-ranked Hanfmann delivered a third point for the Trojans from court four on his 7-5, 6-2 win over Konigsfeldt. The clinching point came from court three where 17th-ranked Nguyen defeated No. 57 Cueto, 6-4, 6-2, to make the score, 4-0, for USC.
Each of the three remaining matches were hotly contested, and the Bears got their only point from court two when 41st-ranked Ben McLachlan finished off a 6-4, 6-2 win against No. 20 Sarmiento. At the bottom of the lineup, Eric Johnson clipped junior Riki McLachlan, 6-4, 6-4, to put the Trojans up, 5-1. One court over, Bayane fell, 7-6, 6-2, with a 7-3 score in the first-set tiebreaker, to Quiroz, to make the final score 6-1.
