LOS ANGELES - The 12th-ranked California men's tennis team (11-8, 4-1 Pac-12) had its four-match winning streak snapped in a 7-0 loss to No. 6 UCLA (19-2, 5-0) on Saturday, April 14, at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Golden Bears will need to regroup, quickly, as they prepare to face top-ranked USC (24-0, 5-0) in a 10 a.m. PT dual on Sunday, April 15, at the David X. Marks Tennis Stadium.
Cal was facing the Bruins for the third time, this season, but was unable to avenge a pair of 4-3 losses. UCLA wrestled the doubles point away from the Bears with wins on the top two courts.
At court one, Alex Brigham and Adrien Puget upended the Bears' third-ranked duo of senior Nick Andrews and sophomore Christoffer Konigsfeldt, 8-3, to put the Bruins up a match. UCLA sealed the first point off an 8-2 win on court two where Nick Meister and Dennis Novikov defeated the Bears' 38th-ranked tandem of senior Carlos Cueto and sophomore Ben McLachlan.
On the third doubles court, the Bears' freshman tandem of Gregory Bayane and Andrew Scholnick secured Cal's only win of the day with an 8-6 victory against Warren Hardie and Clay Thompson.
UCLA swept the singles courts but earned the three points it needed by claiming victories on the bottom half of the lineup. No. 71-ranked Puget dealt the first blow when he put together a 6-0, 6-0 win against Bayane at No. 5 singles to put the Bruins up, 2-0. One court over, No. 117-ranked Marcos Giron put UCLA up, 3-0, when he defeated Konigsfeldt, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 4 singles.
Dennis Mkrtchian delivered the clinching point for the Bruins on a 6-1, 6-2 win over Riki McLachlan at court six. With the dual decided, UCLA continued to press and earned a fifth point when Novikov completed a 6-2, 6-4 victory against No. 57 Cueto at court three. 32nd-ranked Meister tacked up a sixth point with a 6-4, 6-2 win against No. 41-ranked Ben McLachlan on court two, and 62nd-ranked Thompson topped off the 7-0 win with a 6-4, 7-6 victory against No. 55 Andrews at the top court with a 7-5 win in the second-set tiebreaker.
