BERKELEY - The 10th-ranked California women's tennis team (16-4, 8-0 Pac-12) toppled top-ranked UCLA (20-1, 7-1) with a 4-3 victory at the Hellman Tennis Complex on Friday, April 13. Junior Annie Goransson remained undefeated in Pac-12 duals at 7-0 after her victory on the fifth singles court clinched the Golden Bears' 10th straight dual match. The loss was the first of the season for the Bruins.

"It was such a team effort today," said head coach Amanda Augustus. "They just came out with the goal to own their courts, playing at home. Obviously they were number one in the country and undefeated and they are a big rival, so there is a lot of meaning there. Our girls did a really good job of fighting as hard as they could and I am so proud of them."

At 8-0, the Bears are off to their best start in conference matches since the 1985 squad went 11-0 to win the NorPac title. Cal's 10-match winning streak dating back to March 3 is also the longest since an 11-match streak that took the Bears to the NCAA title match in 2009.

The Bears got off to a good start by claiming the doubles point with wins on all three courts. Cal's 17th-ranked team of Goransson and sophomore Anett Schutting started things off with a 8-3 win on court two over the ninth-ranked pair of Courtney Dolehide and Pamela Montez. On court three, the tandem of junior Tayler Davis and freshman Cecilia Estlander clinched the doubles point with their 8-6 victory over UCLA's pairing of McCall Jones and Carling Seguso.

With the doubles point already decided, court one went to a tiebreaker after being tied at 6-6. The 43rd-ranked Cal duo of senior Jana Juricova and freshman Zsofi Susanyi won five straight points in the tiebreaker en route to a 7-6(3) win that gave them the victory over 11th-ranked Robin Anderson and Skylar Morton.

The singles matches then got underway with the Bears holding the early 1-0 lead. At the second court, 12th-ranked Susanyi extended the Bears' lead to 2-0 with her 6-0, 7-6(9) victory over 93rd-ranked McCall Jones. Susanyi's team-leading 31st singles victory was the only match of the day to be decided in straight sets.

UCLA got on the board with their first point of the afternoon after 101st-ranked Montez topped 81st-ranked Schutting on court three, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0. The Bruins followed that up with a win on court six by 107th-ranked Kaitlin Ray over sophomore Alice Duranteau that tied the match at 2-2.

The Bears wasted no time by regaining the lead just a minute later when 55th-ranked Davis overcame a first-set loss to defeat Skylar Morton on court four, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. UCLA once again evened things up when fourth-ranked Anderson defeated Juricova on court one, 2-6, 6-1, 7-5. The loss was 2011 NCAA Singles Champion Juricova's first of the season in dual play.

With things tied up at three points apiece, the dual result came down to the final match of the day on court five. Cal's 99th-ranked Goransson was able to seal the Bears' victory by defeating 98t-ranked Chanelle Van Nguyen, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.

"I was just so happy," Goransson said. "You just want to hug your teammates and it is just an incredible feeling. I was really able to take advantage of the crowd and my teammates, and I just loved it."

The Bears will be back on the court on Saturday, April 14, at noon to face No. 4 USC at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Please visit CalBears.com for more information.
