BERKELEY - The ninth-ranked California women's tennis team (15-4, 7-0 Pac-12) burned No. 27 Arizona State (10-5, 2-3) with a 7-0 victory at the Hellman Tennis Complex on Sunday, April 1. 14th-ranked freshman Zsofi Susanyi recorded her team-leading 30th singles victory as she upended No. 9 Jacqueline Cako at the top singles court to help Cal win its ninth straight dual.

"We just tried to not think about the lineups and just wanted to play our game," said head coach Amanda Augustus. "I had our team focus on what we can control. We just kept our focus, and I think this team has learned that whenever they're asked to step up, they step up for the team. It's an important lesson, and I think they're all learning. I'm pleased with where we're at, and I think we're building to be ready for our matches against USC and UCLA coming up."

At 7-0, the Bears are off to their best start in conference matches since the 1985 squad went 11-0 to win the NorPac title. Cal's nine-match winning streak dating back to March 3 is also the longest since an 11-match streak that took the Bears to the NCAA title match in 2009.

Unable to field a complete lineup, the Sun Devils forfeited a point at the sixth singles court and started the day down one match in doubles with a forfeit at court three. The Bears earned the doubles point with a win at court two where junior Tayler Davis and sophomore Anett Schutting played together for the first time. The new Cal tandem claimed an 8-5 win against Michelle Brycki and Joanna Smith to deliver the Bears' first point.

With the doubles point in hand, Cal's 41st-ranked team of senior Jana Juricova and Susanyi broke the serve of Cako to claim an 8-5 victory at the top court. The duo beat Cako and Leighann Sahagun for their 10th straight win and moved to 13-1 overall in doubles matches.

Cal started singles with a 2-0 lead due to the Arizona State forfeit on court six. At the top court, 14th-ranked Susanyi pushed the Bears' lead to 3-0 as she dismantled ninth-ranked Cako in just over an hour for a 6-2, 6-1 win. It was Susanyi's ninth win in a row and her 17th overall against a ranked opponent. It also made her the first Bear to reach 30 wins, this season. She is now 30-4 with a 14-2 mark in dual matches.

Moments later, 53rd-ranked Davis completed a 6-2, 6-2 win over Brycki at No. 2 singles to secure the dual victory for the Bears. As if they were going in order, court three finished, next. There, 72nd-ranked Schutting came up with her 10th straight singles win when she beat Hannah James, 6-2, 6-3. Schutting has won 14 consecutive sets dating back to March 11 and is tied for second on the team with 28 singles victories.

Appearing in her first singles match since March 17, freshman Cecilia Estlander got the better of Sahagun at court five and claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win to give the Bears a sixth point. It was her fifth victory in a row.

In the day's only three-set match, sophomore Alice Duranteau won her first set against Smith, 6-2, and had a 5-4 lead in the second, but Smith retaliated to win three straight games and force a third-set match tiebreaker. In the extra session, Smith went up, 5-1, before Duranteau stormed back to get within a point at 5-4. The two traded points until Duranteau knotted the tiebreaker at eight all. Duranteau showed her mettle as she earned three of the next four points and win, 11-9, to secure her eighth straight win and a 7-0 sweep for the Bears.

The Bears receive a weekend bye before they host UCLA (April 13) and USC (April 14) at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Please visit CalBears.com for more information.
