TUCSON, Ariz. - The 12th-ranked California men's tennis team (9-7, 2-0 Pac-12) improved to 2-0 in conference matches as the Golden Bears earned a 5-2 win over Arizona (5-12, 0-2 Pac-12) at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center on Sunday, April 1. Cal got the clinching point from No. 6 singles where junior Riki McLachlan defeated Sebastian Ionescu, 7-5, 7-5.
The Bears prevailed on all three doubles courts to secure the doubles point for the 11th time, this season. At court two, Cal's 33rd-ranked team of junior Carlos Cueto and sophomore Ben McLachlan kicked the day off with an 8-5 win against Giacomo Miccini and Mario Urquidi. The point was clinched at the top court where the Bears' third-ranked duo of senior Nick Andrews and junior Christoffer Konigsfeldt defeated Ionescu and Sumeet Shinde, 8-2. It was their fifth straight doubles win and pushed their record in duals to 10-2.
With the doubles point secured, Cal completed the three-court sweep when its freshman tandem of Gregory Bayane and Andrew Scholnick earned an 8-6 victory against Carlos Bermudez and Kieren Thompson.
The Bears wasted little time as singles matches got under way. 76th-ranked Andrews took Miccini out for a ride as he wrapped up the 6-0, 6-0 bicycle win at the top court to give Cal a 2-0 lead in the dual. The Wildcats got on the board and trailed, 2-1, when Bermudez came up with a 7-6, 6-2 win against Konigsfeldt at court four with a 7-5 win in the first-set tiebreaker.
On court two, 37th-ranked Ben McLachlan posted his 20th singles win of the year on a 6-1, 7-5 victory against Urquidi. He now has 23 doubles wins and 20 singles wins, this season. Down at court six, the elder McLachlan finished off Ionescu, 7-5, 7-5, to tack up Cal's fourth point of the day and secure the dual victory.
Each of the final two matches went to three sets and Arizona added a second point from court three where Shinde upset 39th-ranked Cueto by coming back from a 6-1 loss in the first set to win, 7-5, 6-4, in the second and third sets. At court five, Bayane needed a 7-4 win in the first-set tiebreaker but was turned away, 6-3, by Thompson in the second set. In the match tiebreaker, Bayane came up with a 13-11 win to make the final score 5-2 in Cal's favor.
Cal returns to the Bay Area to host a pair of duals at the Hellman Tennis Complex, next weekend. The Bears face No. 22 Washington (12-5, 0-2 Pac-12) in a 1:30 p.m. PT dual on Friday, April 6. Then, Cal hosts No. 59 Oregon (14-3, 0-2) on Saturday, April 7, at 11 a.m. PT. The Bears will celebrate the life and career of Jim McManus on April 7. Fuddruckers will provide food to all those in attendance as a part of McManus Legends Day at Berkeley. Please visit CalBears.com for more information.
