No. 10 California (7-4, 0-0 Pac-12) at No. 28 Utah (7-3, 0-0)
Eccles Tennis Center | Salt Lake City, Utah
Sunday, March 11 - 11 a.m. PT

BOULDER, Colo. - The 10th-ranked California women's tennis team (8-4, 1-0 Pac-12) opened the conference season with a 7-0 win against Pac-12 newcomer Colorado (6-5, 0-1) on Friday, March 9, at the South Campus Tennis Complex. Playing at above 5,000 feet, No. 44-ranked junior Tayler Davis clinched the dual victory for the second straight match as she took out Winde Janssens on court two, 6-3, 6-4.

"I thought that we adjusted to the altitude, really well," said head coach Amanda Augustus. "It was good that we got to play outdoors as I think that favored us. We did a really good job of playing aggressively, and came to the net a lot more than we normally do. I was really pleased with the adjustments we made as the matches went on, today."

Cal got things going by claiming the doubles point with a sweep of all three courts. At court two, Davis and freshman Zsofi Susanyi defeated Janssens and Carla Manzi Tenorio, 8-3, to give the Bears the upper hand. The clinching point came from No. 3 doubles where sophomore Alice Duranteau and freshman Cecilia Estlander took out Ania Anuszkiewicz and Ashley Tiefel, 8-5.

With the point decided, Cal's 27th-ranked tandem of junior Annie Goransson and sophomore Anett Schutting claimed an 8-4 win at the top doubles court over Kristina Schleich and Julyette Steur.

Cal went ahead, 2-0, in a flash as No. 93-ranked Goransson got a 6-0, 6-0 bicycle win against Erin Sanders at No. 4 singles. It was Goransson's 22nd win overall and her third in a row. At the top court, 15th-ranked Susanyi put the Bears in position to clinch the dual when she took out Schleich, 6-2, 6-3, for her team-high 23rd singles victory of the year.

"I knew this was a conference match, but it's still like any other dual match," said Susanyi. "So while it was different, we had to treat it the same way; but it was a really good way to start conference play. Today, I really had to play my game because [Schleich] was fighting the whole time. She never gave up."

With the match teetering on the brink, the Bears closed the deal at court two where Davis took out Janssens, 6-3, 6-4. With the dual decided, Duranteau added a fifth point for the Bears with her 6-4, 6-3 win over Tiefel at court six. Her next-court neighbor No. 109-ranked Estlander posted Cal's sixth point of the day when she earned a 6-1, 7-6 win against Manzi Tenorio with a 7-1 score in the second-set tiebreaker.

As the final match off the courts, No. 101-ranked Schutting came back after dropping her first set to Steur, 6-3, at court three, and forced a third-set match tiebreaker by winning, 6-2, in the second. In the breaker, the two stayed close but Schutting pulled away for a 10-7 win to give the Bears their first 7-0 victory of the year.

Cal will receive a day's break before it plays again. The Bears and No. 28-ranked Utah (7-4, 0-1 Pac-12) will face each other in an 11 a.m. MT match at the Eccles Tennis Center in Salt Lake City. The Utes fell, 7-0, to No. 5 Stanford, today, in their first-ever Pac-12 dual match. For more information, please visit CalBears.com and UtahUtes.com.
