BERKELEY - The seventh-ranked California women's tennis team (6-4, 0-0 Pac-12) fell, 5-2, as hosts of No. 11 Stanford (7-0, 1-0) on Friday, March 2, at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The Golden Bears--who have been without third-ranked senior Jana Juricova since Feb. 12--got points from No. 101-ranked sophomore Anett Schutting and No. 93-ranked junior Annie Goransson, but dropped their fourth straight dual match.
"Annie [Goransson] and Anett [Schutting] have lost both of the last two times against those same opponents, in straight sets," said head coach Amanda Augustus. "I think that was a really big breakthrough for both of them, today."
The Cardinal swept the doubles courts as Cal surrendered the doubles points for just the third time, this season. Stanford's team of Kristie Ahn and Veronica Li drew first blood with an 8-6 win against sophomore Alice Duranteau and freshman Cecilia Estlander at No. 3 doubles.
At the top court, the Cardinal clinched the first point of the day when its top-ranked team of Mallory Burdette and Nicole Gibbs secured an 8-2 win against Cal's 27th-ranked duo of Goransson and Schutting. Stanford completed its three-court sweep when Stacey Tan and Ellen Tsay took out junior Tayler Davis and freshman Zsofi Susanyi, 8-6, at court two.
The Bears evened the score at one-all when No. 101-ranked Schutting dispatched of last year's NCAA singles runner-up in No. 40 Tan at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-3. The Cardinal responded to go up, 2-1, in the dual on a 6-2 6-4 win at the top court by No. 8 Gibbs over No. 15 Susanyi. The loss snapped Susanyi's five-match singles winning streak.
Down at court six, Li set Stanford up with a 3-1 lead when she defeated Duranteau, 6-3, 6-4. One court down, 53rd-ranked Tsay clinched the Cardinal victory with a 6-4, 6-4 win against No. 109 Estlander.
With the dual decided, No. 7 Burdette and No. 44 Davis headed into a third-set match tiebreaker. Davis won the first set, 6-3, but Burdette responded to force the third set with a 7-5 win in the second. Burdette notched Stanford's fifth point with a 10-7 win in the tiebreaker. No. 93 Goransson completed the day with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Ahn at court four to make the final score 5-2 for Stanford.
The Bears are back in action as hosts of No. 24 Pepperdine (5-3) in a noon PT match on Saturday, March 3. Please visit CalBears.com for live video streams of each match.
