EUGENE, Ore. - The ninth-ranked California women's tennis team (11-4, 4-0 Pac-12) secured its fifth straight dual victory with a 7-0 win against No. 68 Oregon (8-3, 0-2) on Saturday, March 17, at the Student Tennis Center. The Golden Bears welcomed sixth-ranked senior Jana Juricova back to the lineup in a full-time capacity and she provided the team with clinching points in both doubles and singles to keep Cal undefeated in 20 all-time meetings against the Ducks.
Cal swept all three doubles courts for the sixth time, this year, to grab the first point of the day. At court two, the Bears' 27th-ranked duo of junior Annie Goransson and sophomore Anett Schutting won their team-high 20th match together in an 8-2 victory over Trudie du Toit and Julia Metzger.
At the top court, 38th-ranked Juricova and freshman Zsofi Susanyi put together their 10th win together on an 8-2 win against Sofia Hager and Patricia Skowronski to clinch the doubles point for the Bears. With the first point secured, Cal rounded out the doubles sweep when sophomore Alice Duranteau and freshman Cecilia Estlander completed an 8-1 win against Pascale Neubert and Rabea Stueckemann at court three.
The Bears went up, 2-0, in the dual with a win on the fourth singles court where No. 66-ranked Schutting claimed a 6-0, 6-2 win against Hager to run her winning streak to six straight matches. On court three, No. 100 Goransson also won her sixth straight singles match and earned her 25th victory of the year on a 6-1, 6-0 win against du Toit to give the Bears a 3-0 lead.
In her first singles match since Feb. 12, Juricova had her hands full with Metzger at the top court as the Oregon junior raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first set. However, Juricova settled into her match and erased that deficit to claim a 6-3 win in the first set before serving up a bagel in the second set for a 6-3, 6-0 win and the clinching point in the dual match. It was her seventh straight singles win and her 20th of the year to make her the fifth Bear to reach 20 wins, this season.
With the match decided, Cal posted three more points with wins at courts six, two, and five. At No. 6 singles, Estlander came up with a 6-2, 6-3 win against Lana Buttner to make the score 5-0 for the Bears. In the day's only three-set match, No. 17-ranked Susanyi won her first set, 6-2, against Skowronski but was edged, 7-5, in the second set before she came up with a 10-4 win in the third-set tiebreaker.
At court five, Duranteau provided Cal with its seventh point for the 9-0 sweep in the dual when she came up with a 6-1, 7-6 win against Stueckemann; 7-2 in the second-set tiebreaker.
The Bears will return home for their next seven dual matches including five Pac-12 duals. Cal gets the seven-match home stand started with a 1:30 p.m. PT match against Sacramento State on Friday, March 23. Admission to all matches at Hellman Tennis Complex is free.
