DURHAM, N.C. - The eighth-ranked California men's tennis team (7-6) fell, 4-0, to No. 15 Pepperdine (8-6) in a neutral-site dual at the Ambler Tennis Stadium on Saturday, March 10. The Waves claimed the doubles point with wins on courts two and three and took victories on the top two singles courts.
The Golden Bears' fifth-ranked doubles team of senior Nick Andrews and junior Christoffer Konigsfeldt upended Pepperdine's fourth-ranked duo of Alex Llompart and Finn Tearney, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles.
The Waves made the first move of the day as Sebastian Fanselow and Jenson Turner claimed an 8-0 win over Cal's 51st-ranked team of junior Carlos Cueto and sophomore Ben McLachlan at No. 2 doubles. Andrews and Konigsfeldt won, next, but Pepperdine's tandem of Hugh Clarke and David Sofaer sealed the first point of the day with an 8-4 win at court three against junior Riki McLachlan and freshman Chase Melton.
Pepperdine extended its lead to 2-0 from court two when No. 26-ranked Tearney earned a 6-3, 6-2 win against No. 39 Cueto. It was Cueto's first match since Feb. 19 at the ITA Indoor Championships.
Turner recorded the same score, 6-3, 6-2, at court six with a win against Melton to push the Waves ahead by three points, 3-0. At the top court, No. 18 Fanselow edged No. 94-ranked Andrews, 6-4, in the first set, and topped Andrews, 6-3, in the second set to secure the clinching point for the Waves.
With the dual result decided, singles matches at courts three, four, and five were suspended. The Bears will return to action against No. 5 Duke (10-2) on Sunday, March 11, at noon ET (9 a.m. PT) at Ambler Stadium. The Blue Devils suffered their first home loss, 4-3, to Pepperdine on Friday.
