SAN DIEGO - The 11th-ranked California men's tennis team (7-5) took out No. 25 San Diego (5-4) in a 5-2 victory on Thursday, March 1, at the Hogan Tennis Center. The Golden Bears had claimed a 4-0 win against the Toreros in the second match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend event, as well, on Jan. 30.
No. 94-ranked senior Nick Andrews provided the clinching point as he dismissed No. 63 Nikola Bubnic in three sets, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. Andrews snapped a three-match singles losing streak of his own to collect his 11th singles win, this season.
Cal claimed the doubles point for the ninth time in 12 matches with wins at the top two courts. San Diego made the first move with a win at No. 3 doubles where Victor Pugliese and Clarke Spinosa took out junior Riki McLachlan and senior Tommie Murphy, 8-2.
The Bears responded to get an 8-3 win at the top court where their fifth-ranked team of Andrews and junior Christoffer Konigsfeldt defeated Bubnic and Thibaut Visy. The clincher came from court two as sophomore Ben McLachlan and freshman Chase Melton completed an 8-6 win against Ciaran Fitzgerald and Patrick Pohlmann.
The Toreros tore into singles matches to get on the board with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles where Pugliese defeated senior Ahmed Ismail. Riki McLachlan put the Bears back on top with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Fitzgerald on court five, but San Diego tied the match up for a second time from court three when Spinosa earned a 7-5, 6-1 win against Konigsfeldt.
In the first three-set match to finish, No. 40-ranked Ben McLachlan came back from dropping his first set, 6-3, to No. 80 Pohlmann to earn a 6-2, 6-2 result in sets two and three, at No. 2 singles. Andrews' win over Bubnic came from the top court, next, to seal Cal's seventh dual victory, this season.
With the dual result in the books, the Bears tacked on one more point from court four. Freshman Gregory Bayane won in his first-set tiebreaker against No. 102 Visy, but was edged, 6-4, in the second, before he came through with a 10-8 win in the third-set match tiebreaker.
The Bears will remain in the San Diego area to participate in the 123rd-annual Pacific Coast Doubles Championships at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club in La Jolla, Calif. from Thursday-Sunday (March 1-4).
