LOS ANGELES - The fifth-ranked California women's tennis team (6-3) fell, 4-3, for the second time in as many days as No. 7 USC (9-1) claimed a win on the courts of the David X. Marks Tennis Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 25. The Golden Bears were without senior leader Jana Juricova for the second straight dual, but won the doubles point and got a marquee victory at the top court where No. 23-ranked freshman Zsofi Susanyi took out No. 10 Zoe Scandalis, 10-3, in a third-set match tiebreaker.

"All things considered, we did a lot of great things, this weekend," said head coach Amanda Augustus. "We had some good wins in doubles, especially today, and Zsofi [Susanyi] went undefeated. Considering that this was the first time that the team played matches without Jana [Juricova], I think we showed how deep we are. Those were the other two teams [UCLA and USC] that were in the indoor semifinals, and we lost, 4-3, to each of them. I think we learned a lot as a team about playing on the road and these tough matches always serve us well, later in the season. We're just going to use it and keep working hard."

Cal claimed the doubles point with wins at the top two courts, but USC was the first to strike with a win at court three. There, the Trojans' 45th-ranked team of Valeria Pulido and Scandalis took out sophomore Alice Duranteau and freshman Cecilia Estlander, 8-4.

On the next doubles court, Cal's team of junior Tayler Davis and Susanyi held off Danielle Lao and Alison Ramos to get a 9-7 win. At the top court, junior Annie Goransson and sophomore Anett Schutting came up with a big 9-7 win over USC's fourth-ranked tandem of Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria to seal the first point of the dual for the Bears. Christian and Santamaria are the defending ITA indoor doubles champs.

USC got on the board when No. 17 Lao claimed a 6-0 win over No. 48 Davis at No. 2 singles. Davis retired due to an injury and did not begin her second set. The Women of Troy took a 2-1 lead in the dual off of No. 63-ranked Christian's 6-3, 6-1 win against Goransson at court four.

The Bears responded to tie the match, two-all, as Duranteau dispatched of Ramos at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-3, but USC had two more points in its pocket and cashed in on one of them at court three where No. 24 Santamaria defeated No. 85 Schutting, 6-4, 6-0. The Trojans got the clinching point from court five where Gabrielle DeSimone upended No. 103-ranked Estlander, 7-5, 6-2. Susanyi's win came, next, at the top court to make the final score 4-3.

Cal is back in action as hosts of top-ranked rival Stanford (5-0, 1-0 Pac-12) in a 1:30 p.m. PT dual on Friday, March 2, at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Please visit CalBears.com for live scoring and video links.
