STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 10-ranked California men's tennis team (5-5) suffered a 6-1 loss to No. 9 Stanford (7-3) on Saturday, Feb. 25, at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. Without 67th-ranked junior Carlos Cueto, the Golden Bears shifted their doubles and singles lineups but came up short against the Cardinal in the first meeting of the year.
Stanford opened up the dual by claiming a win at the top doubles court. Bradley Klahn and Ryan Thacher upset Cal's fourth-ranked duo of senior Nick Andrews and junior Christoffer Konigsfeldt, 8-4. The Cardinal wasted no time as it clinched the first point of the day with a win at No. 2 doubles where junior Riki McLachlan and freshman Andrew Scholnick were edged by Matt Kandath and Denis Lin, 8-6.
With the doubles point decided, the match at court three went into a tiebreaker at six-all. John Morrissey and Robert Stineman raced out to a 6-2 lead on Cal's team of sophomore Ben McLachlan and freshman Chase Melton, but the Bears came back to make things interesting before the Cardinal earned a 7-6 win with a 7-5 score in the match tiebreaker.
In singles matches, Stanford got wins at all but one court. Freshman Gregory Bayane earned a 3-6, 7-5, 10-4 win against Lin at No. 4 singles to give Cal its only point of the day. At the top court, No. 29 Thacher came back after dropping his first set to Andrews, 6-3, to win, 6-1, 6-2, in the second and third sets.
At court two, Klahn needed a pair of tiebreakers, but upended No. 44 Ben McLachlan, 7-6, 7-6. On court three, Kandath, too, came back from dropping a 6-3 first set to Konigsfeldt to win, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. At court five, Morrissey took out Scholnick, 6-2, 6-2, and at court six, Stineman got a 6-4, 7-6 win over Melton.
The Bears are back in action on Monday (Feb. 27) as hosts of No. 16 Baylor (4-4) in a 1:30 p.m. PT match at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Please visit CalBears.com for live streaming video links.
