CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The seventh-ranked California women's tennis team (6-0) took out No. 6 Georgia (7-1) in the quarterfinals of the 2012 ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships at the Boar's Head Tennis Club on Saturday, Feb. 11. The fifth-seeded Golden Bears upended the fourth-seeded Bulldogs to exact revenge for their round of 16 exit from last spring's NCAA championships.

Cal advances to its third indoor semifinal in four years and will have to face top-seeded No. 3-ranked Duke (7-0) in a noon ET (9 a.m. PT) dual on Sunday, Feb. 12, for the right to advance to its first championship match since 2000. The Blue Devils took out No. 10 Michigan, 4-0, to earn their spot in the semifinals. On the other side of the bracket, second-seeded No. 4-ranked UCLA faces unseeded No. 16-ranked USC.

"We just tried not to think about that fact that we were playing indoors," said head coach Amanda Augustus. "[We] just tried to take care of our individual matches. That is when we play our best; when we just focus on what we need to do at every court."

The Bears didn't surrender a dual point for the second time in as many days and opened up by claiming wins on the top two doubles courts. At court two, Cal's duo of junior Annie Goransson and sophomore Anett Schutting put together their 11th consecutive victory in an 8-2 win over No. 60-ranked Katie Fuller and Lauren Herring.

At the top doubles court, senior Jana Juricova and freshman Zsofi Susanyi teamed to upend the second-ranked tandem of Nadja Gilchrist and Chelsey Gullickson, 8-1, to seal the doubles point for the Bears. At court three, junior Tayler Davis and freshman Cecilia Estlander held a 6-5 advantage against Lilly Kimbell and Maho Kowase when their match was suspended.

"Georgia is very aggressive, in doubles," said Augustus. "They have three really good doubles teams. I told our team we needed to go out there and play our game, but still be aggressive. We did a really good job of figuring out tactics on the court, today. We didn't think we had to win the doubles point to win the match, but it was definitely crucial for us, moving into singles."

At the top singles court, fifth-ranked Juricova met her old rival No. 2-ranked Gullickson for the sixth time in their careers. Though Gullickson won the first four meetings, Juricova's 6-2, 6-2 win, today, put a two-match winning streak in her hands and gave the Bears a 2-0 lead in the dual.

Down at court five, No. 74-ranked Schutting claimed her ninth straight singles victory when she took out No. 56 Fuller, 6-2, 6-3, to give the Bears a 3-0 lead in the match. No. 21-ranked Susanyi closed the book on the Bulldogs from court two where she secured Cal's fourth point on a 6-3, 6-3 win over No. 52 Herring.

At court three, No. 32-ranked Davis had fought back to tie the second set, five-all, after dropping a 6-2 first set to Gilchrist. At No. 4 singles, No. 81-ranked Goransson won her first set, 7-5, against No. 22 Kowase, but had her serve broken, and was down, 2-0, in the second. At court six, No. 64-ranked Estlander was behind, 4-3, in the second set to Kimbell, and had lost her first set, 7-5. All three matches were suspended when Susanyi delivered the clinching point.

The victory was Cal's 30th overall at the indoor championships. Duke owns an 8-2 advantage in 10 all-time meetings against Cal. The Bears are 1-4 in duals that have taken place at the indoor championships. The last time the two teams met, a fifth-ranked Duke squad claimed a 5-2 win over No. 7 Cal on March 11, last year. The last time the two teams met, indoors, the Devils took a 4-1 win in the semifinals on Feb. 8, 2003. Please visit www.itatennis.com for complete information on the indoor championships.
