CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The seventh-ranked California women's tennis team earned a 4-0 victory over No. 11 Miami (2-1) in the first round of the 2012 ITA National Women's Tennis Indoor Championships at the Boar's Head Tennis Club on Friday, Feb. 10.

The fifth-seeded Golden Bears (5-0) will draw fourth-seeded No. 6-ranked Georgia (7-0) in a second-round match set for noon ET (9 a.m. PT) on Saturday, Feb. 11.

"The first match is always tough, here," said head coach Amanda Augustus. "Having to travel across the country; we also really never play, indoors. Everyone was on court for a while, today, so that was good for them. We are just taking things one match at a time, here."

Cal jumped on the Hurricanes by claiming victories on the top two doubles courts to secure the first point of the day. At the top court, senior Jana Juricova teamed with freshman Zsofi Susanyi to make short work of Anna Bartenstein and Brittany Dubins as the Bears completed an 8-1 win to open up the day.

Miami struck back with a win on court five as Gabriela Mejia and Lina Lileikite claimed an 8-5 win over junior Tayler Davis and freshman Cecilia Estlander. But the Bears had the last word as their team of junior Annie Goransson and sophomore Anett Schutting produced their 10th straight win; an 8-5 victory over Melissa Bolivar and Liat Zimmerman, at court two. It was third consecutive match in which Goransson and Schutting provided the clinching victory for the doubles point.

"The matches were great on all three courts," said Augustus. "It was an intense college tennis atmosphere. We knew Miami was good, in doubles, but we came out and played at a high quality. Generally speaking, we are successful in singles when we win the doubles point."

The Bears claimed five first-set victories as singles matches got under way. At the top court, fifth-ranked Juricova won her first set, 6-4, and was up, 3-2, in the second before her match was suspended. At court two, No. 21 Susanyi was working on a 6-3, 4-3 match when her match was also suspended.

No. 64-ranked Estlander was the first Bear off the courts with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Dubins at No. 6 singles. 81st-ranked Goransson provided Cal with a 3-0 lead when she finished off Bolivar, 6-1, 6-4, at court four.

After dropping her first set, 7-5, to Lileikite, No. 32-ranked Davis had come back to hold a 2-1 lead in the second set, but her match was stopped when the Bears clinched the dual victory from court five, where No. 74-ranked Schutting finished off Zimmerman, 6-2, 6-2.

The victory was Cal's 29th overall at the indoor championships. The Bears have advanced at least as far as the quarterfinal round in four of their last five trips to the indoor championships.

Cal will have revenge on its mind when it faces the Bulldogs. The last time the Bears and the Dogs clashed was in the round of 16 of last year's NCAA Championships where Georgia edged Cal, 4-3, to move on. The last Cal-Georgia matchup at the indoor championships was in the 2009 semifinals. The Bulldogs claimed a 4-2 win but lost in the championship match to Northwestern.
