BERKELEY - The seventh-ranked California women's tennis team (2-0) ran past No. 36 UNLV (3-1) in a 6-1 victory to advance to the second round of the 2012 ITA Kick-Off Weekend event at the Hellman Tennis Complex on Friday, Jan. 27.

"Today, I was very pleased with our doubles play," said head coach Amanda Augustus. "We came out with a much better intensity on call three courts. We're seeing our work translate into success, so I'm very happy to see where we're starting to move. I think we also did a good job transitioning between doubles and singles, so we'll probably focus on that, tomorrow; carrying our energy over from doubles to singles."

After a small delay due to moisture on the courts, the Golden Bears took the first shot of the day as junior Tayler Davis and sophomore Alice Duranteau claimed an 8-1 win over Ella Bourchier and Anett Ferenczi-Bako at No. 3 doubles. Moments later, Cal secured the first point of the day on an 8-3 win by freshman Cecilia Estlander and senior Jana Juricova as the duo took out UNLV's team of Aleksandra Josifoska and Nives Pavlovic. Court two's match was called after the doubles point was awarded.

The Bears wasted little time as they claimed a 2-0 lead when No. 5 Juricova defeated No. 87 Josifoska, 6-1, 6-3, at the top singles court. At court four, No. 74-ranked sophomore Anett Schutting got a 6-4, 6-0 win over Manon de Lanlay to put Cal up, 3-0, in the match. One court over, No. 81-ranked junior Annie Goransson completed her 6-1, 6-2 victory against Pavlovic to clinch the dual match for the Bears.

"I could feel that we had a good spirit, and you could feel that we were doing well on all the courts," said Goransson. "I didn't know, at the time, that I had clinched the match, but I thought we all played really well, today. We're really comfortable on our home courts. We love playing at Hellman, and we can definitely feel the home court advantage, here."

No. 64-ranked Estlander followed Goransson to tack up Cal's fifth point of the day when she defeated Ferenczi-Bako, 6-0, 7-5, at court five, for her eighth straight singles win. Duranteau topped Bourchier, 6-3, 6-1, on court six to give the Bears a 6-0 lead in the match. On court two, No. 32-ranked Davis fell in a tight first set to No. 121 Lucia Batta, 7-5, but couldn't force a third set as she lost, 6-2, in the second.

In the day's second match, No. 28 Washington (1-0) took out No. 32 San Diego (0-1) on a three-set victory, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, by Julija Lukac over Maja Sujica, on court six. At the top singles court, 10th-ranked Denise Dy gave the Huskies a boost with her 6-3, 6-0 win over Stephanie Hoffpauir.

The Toreros will meet the Rebels in a 10 a.m. PT consolation match tomorrow (Sat., Jan. 28) before Cal and Washington take the courts for a match-up of Pac-12 foes set for 1 p.m. PT. The winner between the Bears and the Huskies will claim one of 16 spots in the 2012 ITA National Team Indoor Championships set to take place at the Boar's Head Tennis Club in Charlottesville, Va., Feb. 10-13.
