SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The seventh-ranked California women's tennis team (1-0) earned its first dual victory of the spring, 6-1, over No. 71 Santa Clara (0-1), at the Degheri Tennis Center as 32nd-ranked junior Tayler Davis completed a 6-2, 6-0 win over Alex Zaniewski at No. 2 singles.

"It was exciting to finally kick off the spring dual season," said head coach Amanda Augustus. "I think we had a good showing, today, in both singles and doubles, especially after having this match delayed, twice. It's a good start and we're looking forward to building on it, as the ITA Kick-Off Weekend approaches, this week."

The Golden Bears were originally slated to face the Broncos on Friday, Jan. 20, at the Hellman Tennis Complex, but inclement weather conditions twice forced the postponement, and eventually, the relocation of the match to Santa Clara.

Cal opened the day by claiming the doubles point with a sweep of all three matches. Freshman Cecilia Estlander and senior Jana Juricova teamed for just the second time in their careers to claim an 8-2 win over Jessica Agra and Katie Le, at the top court, just before Davis and sophomore Alice Duranteau finished off Kacie Wagner and Zaniewski, 8-5, at court three to take the first point of the day. At No. 2 doubles, junior Annie Goransson and sophomore Anett Schutting came up with their seventh straight win, together, on an 8-6 result against Kelly Lamble and Maggie McGeorge.

The Bears went ahead, 2-0, in the match as No. 81 Goransson finished off Lamble, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 3 singles, and took their third point of the day on a 6-1, 6-1 win by No. 74 Schutting over Agra at court four. Davis' win over Zaniewski came next at court two.

With the dual outcome decided, Duranteau posted Cal's fifth point in a 6-4, 6-3 against Wagner at court five. Santa Clara got its only point from court six where McGeorge defeated senior Stephany Chang. Chang won the first set, 6-4, but dropped a 6-3 decision in the second. McGeorge sealed the victory with a 10-7 win in the third-set tiebreaker.

At the top court, No. 37-ranked Le took a 6-3 win in her first set against No. 5 Juricova, but the defending NCAA champion forced a third-set tiebreaker with a 6-3 win in the second set. There, she went to the wire against Le before edging the Bronco sophomore, 10-8.

The Bears return home for their first dual matches at Hellman Tennis Complex, this weekend. Cal hosts the 2012 ITA Kick-Off Weekend and will face UNLV in a 10 a.m. PT match on Friday (Jan. 27). Washington and San Diego meet at 1 p.m. in the second match of the weekend.

On Saturday (Jan. 28), the two first-round losers will meet in a 10 a.m. consolation match before the two winners take the courts for the title match at 1 p.m. The winner of the championship match will advance to claim one of 16 spots in the 2012 ITA National Team Indoor Championships set to take place at the Boar's Head Tennis Club in Charlottesville, Va., Feb. 10-13.
