BERKELEY - The California women's tennis team opened 2012 with a bang as it collected 12 wins on the first day of the Cal Winter Invitational at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The Golden Bears will face Fresno State for singles matches and Saint Mary's College in doubles play on Saturday, Jan. 14; the second day of the three-day round-robin tournament.

In singles matches against Cal Poly, No. 5-ranked senior Jana Juricova highlighted the day's victories with a 6-3, 6-4 win at the top position. The Bears did not drop a set in each of its eight singles wins, today, and gave up just a total of 24 games. No. 74-ranked sophomore Anett Schutting, No. 81-ranked junior Annie Goransson, and No. 64-ranked freshman Cecilia Estlander each made off with 6-0, 6-1 victories.

No. 21-ranked freshman Zsofi Susanyi won her seventh straight singles match dating back to Oct. 23, 2011, on a 6-2, 6-2 result against Jennifer Cornea while senior Stephany Chang and Estlander each hit the 10-win plateau for the 2011-12 season. Eight Cal players now hold at least 10 wins, this year. Alice Dureanteau picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win against Ane McPike.

The Bears went undefeated in four doubles matches against Fresno State. Juricova and Susanyi combined for an 8-2 win against Aishwarya Agraval and Marianne Jodoin at the top court. In the tightest match of the day, junior Tayler Davis and Estlander completed an 8-6 tiebreaker win against Bianca Modoc and Laura Pola at the third doubles position.

Goransson and Schutting played at the second position while Chang and Duranteau formed Cal's fourth doubles team. In one mixed doubles match, senior Catalina Visico and the newest member of the Cal squad--freshman Laura Posylkin--suffered an 8-1 setback against Kouyoumjian of Cal Poly and Elizabeth Searl of Saint Mary's College.
