TULSA, Okla. - The 14th-ranked California men's tennis team opened its 2012 dual season with a key road victory against No. 23 Tulsa as the Golden Bears defeated the Golden Hurricane, 4-3, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on Friday, Jan. 13.
Senior Nick Andrews provided the winning point from the second singles court as he ousted No. 83-ranked Ashley Watling in the third-set tiebreaker, 7-5. Andrews won his first set against Watling, 6-3, but the Hurricane came back and won a 6-3 set of his own before the two pushed the final set to a six-all tie.
Cal claimed the doubles point with wins at the top two courts. The Bears' 27th-ranked team of senior Carlos Cueto and sophomore Ben McLachlan came off the courts, first, on an 8-6 win against Tulsa's 37th-ranked duo of Grant Ive and Tristan Jackson, at court two. Cal's fifth-ranked team of Andrews and junior Christoffer Konigsfeldt sealed the first point of the day as they upended the third-ranked duo of Clifford Marsland and Watling, 8-5, at the top court.
The Bears went ahead, 2-0, in the match when Konigsfeldt completed a 6-1, 6-2 win against No. 88 Ive, at No. 4 singles. One court down, freshman Gregory Bayane got first season with the Bears off to a strong start with a 6-4, 7-5 win against Lucian Gheorghe on court five to help Cal go ahead, 3-0, in the match.
Tulsa fought back to get on the board when Marsland claimed a three-set win against No. 42-ranked Ben McLachlan, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6, with a 7-2 win in the tiebreaker. The Hurricane made it interesting thanks to a win at the top singles court where Japie de Klerk took out Cueto, 6-4, 7-6, with a 7-3 result in the tiebreaker, but Andrews squashed the Tulsa comeback when he won, next, on court two. Tulsa got the final point of the day as Jackson defeated senior Riki McLachlan, 7-6, 4-6, 6-1, in three sets.
