ST. HELENA, Calif. - No. 45-ranked California men's tennis senior Nick Andrews and senior Ahmed Ismail each picked up singles wins to stay undefeated in group play at the 2011 Land Rover Napa Valley Tennis Classic at Meadowood Resort on Sat., Sept. 24.
The Golden Bears posted three more wins and were victorious in their only doubles match of the day in which the fifth-ranked tandem of Andrews and junior Christoffer Konigsfeldt claimed an 8-3 win against Vanderbilt's duo of Blake Bazarnik and Alex DiValerio.
Cal's three singles wins helped it maintain pace with UCLA, which also went to 6-2 after two days of play. Tulsa and Notre Dame were next, each with 4-4 marks while Tennessee and Vanderbilt both fell to 1-7. USTA junior players came up with five more wins on the second day to move to 10-6, overall.
Andrews made short work of Tennessee's Ed Jones with a 6-0, 6-1 victory, but it was Ismail who provided the day's signature win when he took out Notre Dame's 28th-ranked Casey Watt in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
No. 79-ranked Konigsfeldt was credited for a win when Tennessee's Hunter Reese pulled out of today's scheduled match. Sophomore Ben McLachlan took the upper hand against No. 44-ranked Ashley Watling of Tulsa with a 6-4 win in the first set, but Watling retaliated to earn a three-set win, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Play concludes on Sun., Sept. 25, as Cal's seniors hit the courts, first, with 8 a.m. PT matches. Ismail will complete group play against USTA junior Nikko Madregallejo and Andrews will face Vanderbilt's Bazarnik. McLachlan draws Gonzalez Austin of Vanderbilt at 9:15 a.m., and Konigsfeldt gets USTA junior Spencer Papa in a 10:30 a.m. match. Group play will be followed by the 10-point tiebreak shoot-out tournament.
EVENT FORMAT: Each school is represented by four players to compete alongside the eight juniors, and the 32-man field is split into eight pools featuring three collegians and a junior. Following three matches in pool play, the eight pool winners will compete in a single-elimination, 10-point tiebreak tournament. The winner of the tournament will receive a USTA-sponsored wild card into a USTA Pro Circuit event that is yet to be determined.
