Cal Edged in USTA Junior National Team Exhibition

BERKELEY - The California men's tennis team hosted the USTA (United States Tennis Association) Junior National Team in an exhibition dual match on Wed., Sept. 21, at Hellman Tennis Complex in which the Golden Bears won the doubles point, but were defeated, 5-3.

The two teams opened with three doubles matches. At the top court, Cal's fifth-ranked tandem of senior Nick Andrews and junior Christoffer Konigsfeldt claimed an 8-2 win over Luca Corinteli and Alexios Halebian. Redshirt freshman Chase Melton teamed with senior Tommie Murphyat the second court to force a seven-all tie against Connor Farren and Mitchell Krueger, but the USTA juniors prevailed with a 9-7 result.

At the third doubles court, senior Ahmed Ismail and junior Riki McLachlanearned an 8-6 win in the tiebreaker against JC Aragone and Nikko Madregallejo to take a 9-8 victory in the match and secure the doubles point.

Seven singles matches were contested; three of which split sets and went to a third-set match tiebreaker. At the top court, No. 45-ranked Andrews fell, 6-3, 6-1, to Halebian. At court seven, Murphy was edged by Madregallejo; 6-4, 7-5. Cal's two points came in straight-set victories. Ben McLachlantook a 6-0, 6-2 win over Farren at court three, and Ismail turned Aragone away, 6-1, 6-2, at court five. The rest of the matches went to third sets.

At court two, Krueger won the first set with a 7-3 victory in the tiebreaker, but Konigsfeldt forced a match tiebreaker with a 6-4 win in the second. Krueger came up with a 10-2 win in the breaker to earn the point for the USTA juniors. At No. 4 singles, Corinteli needed a 7-2 win in the tiebreaker to notch the first set over Riki McLachlan, but McLachlan split the match with a 6-4 win in the second. Corinteli had the last point as he secured a 10-5 win in the match tiebreaker.

On court six, Papa took a 6-4 win over Melton in the first set, but Melton responded to split with a 6-3 win in the second. A close tiebreaker went Papa's way as he secured the match with a 10-8 win.
