OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. - Members of the California men's tennis team opened up the fall tournament season on the clay courts of the Olympia Fields Country Club Fighting Illini Invitational on Fri., Sept. 16. The Golden Bears came away with four wins in doubles to go with two more in singles.
In doubles matches, senior Nick Andrews and junior Riki McLachlanteamed up to pick up a pair of wins. The duo defeated Illinois' team of Bruno Abdelnour and Stephen Hoh, 8-5, before they took out Ben Chen and Sudanwa Sitaram of Texas, 9-7.
Junior Carlos Cueto and sophomore Ben McLachlan represented Cal's other pair. The tandem also faced Abdelnour and Hoh and came away with an 8-1 victory. Cueto and Ben McLachlanearned their second win, 9-7, over the Illini team of Tim Kopinski and Dennis Nevolo.
In singles matches, No. 26-ranked Cueto was edged by Notre Dame's Greg Andrews in the first-set tiebreaker, 7-5, but came back to win, 6-4, 6-2, in the second and third. Ben McLachlanclaimed Cal's other singles victory in a 6-3, 6-0 win over Wyatt McCoy of Notre Dame.
In a tough-fought match against the seventh-ranked Nevolo, No. 45-ranked Andrews fell in two sets, 6-4, 6-3. Riki McLachlandrew the Fighting Irish's Blas Moros in his singles match but lost, 6-4, 6-2.
