STANFORD, Calif. - Top-seeded and No. 1-ranked California women's tennis junior Jana Juricova moved into the singles round of 32 with a straight set win, 6-2, 6-0, over No. 20 Reka Zsilinszka of Duke in the opening round of the 2011 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships at the Taube Family Tennis Center on Wed., May 25. The Golden Bears also sent No. 23-ranked senior Mari Andersson into the second round as she defeated No. 32 Jullian O'Neill of Georgia Tech, 6-3, 6-3.
Juricova will take on No. 42 Joanna Mather of Florida in the second round at 10 a.m. PT on Thur., May 26. Andersson draws the second seed in the tournament as her next opponent; No. 2-ranked Maria Sanchez of USC in a 10 a.m. match.
No. 55-ranked sophomore Tayler Davis went the distance in a three-setter against No. 28 Sanaa Bhambri of North Carolina State, but was upended in the third-set tiebreaker as she fell, 6-7(2), 6-3, 7-6(3), in the first round of singles play.
As the top-ranked and top-seeded tandem in the doubles competition, Andersson and Juricova look to recapture the crown they won in 2009 as they open round-of-32 play against Tennessee's 28th-ranked team of Rosalia Alda and Millie Nichols in a 5 p.m. PT match on May 26.
