2011 NCAA Div. I Women's Tennis Championship Bracket
First and Second Round Tournament Central
BERKELEY - The ninth-seeded California women's tennis team (17-6) claimed a 4-0 victory over Boston University (12-9) in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships at the Hellman Tennis Complex on Sat., May 14. The Golden Bears advance to the second round to face No. 18 USC (15-7) on Sun., May 15, at noon PT.
Cal came up with wins at courts two and three to secure the doubles point. Sophomore Tayler Davis and freshman Alice Duranteau earned an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles over Monika Mical and Vanessa Steiner before the Bears' 30th-ranked duo of sophomore Annie Goransson and freshman Anett Schutting clinched the point with an 8-3 win against Leonie Athanasiadis and Jessi Linero at court two. At the top court, play was suspended while Cal's top-ranked team of senior Mari Andersson and junior Jana Juricova held a 6-4 lead over Vivien Laszloffy and Stefani Nunic.
No. 1-ranked Juricova came off the courts first and pushed Cal's lead to 2-0 as she nabbed her 20th straight dual singles victory in a 6-1, 6-1 win over Nunic at the top court. The Bears went ahead by three points as No. 104-ranked Schutting closed out a 6-1, 6-2 win over Petra Santini at court three.
Cal won the first set at all six courts, so the race was on to clinch the dual victory, but No. 55-ranked Davis completed a 6-1, 6-3 win over Linero at court six to seal the win for the Bears.
The Bears will face the Women of Troy for the second time this season. Cal won the first meeting, 5-2, in Los Angeles on March 25. The Trojans defeated No. 42 Saint Mary's College, 4-1, after they dropped the doubles point. USC's lineup boasts the No. 2-ranked singles player in the nation in Maria Sanchez. Sanchez teams with Kaitlyn Christian to form the fourth-ranked doubles team in the country.
