First and Second Round Tournament Central
BERKELEY - The 14th-seeded California men's tennis team (13-7) claimed a 4-0 victory over Marist (18-4) in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships at the Hellman Tennis Complex on Fri., May 13. The Golden Bears will face Fresno State (17-8) in the second round at 3 p.m. PT on Sat., May 14, for the right to advance to the round of 16 for the first time since 2003.
The Bears claimed the first point of the day with wins at the top two courts. Cal's No. 23-ranked duo of junior Nick Andrews and sophomore Christoffer Konigsfeldt defeated Landon Greene and Nicolas Pisecky, 8-1, at No. 1 doubles to push the Bears in front. Freshman Ben McLachlan and senior Pedro Zerbini clinched the point for the Bears with an 8-4 win over Matt Himmelsbach and Joris Van Eck at court two. Play was suspended at court three when the doubles match was clinched, but Cal's 87th-ranked team of sophomore Carlos Cueto and senior Jonathan Dahan held a 5-2 lead against Will Reznek and Lorenzo Rossi at the time.
Into singles, Cal secured first-set victories on all but two courts. No. 64-ranked Cueto put the Bears ahead, 2-0, on a 6-1, 6-3 win over Van Eck at court two. Minutes later, No. 20-ranked Zerbini earned his team a third point when he defeated Rossi, 6-2, 6-2, at the top court.
Senior Bozhidar Katsarov dropped his first set at court six, 6-3, to Reznek, but came back to force a third set with a 6-3 win of his own. At court three, No. 96-ranked Andrews was edged, 6-4, in his first set, but came back strong in the second to win, 6-2, and earned a third set against Pisecky. Neither match was completed.
At court four, Konigsfeldt had a 6-4 first-set win over Himmelsbach under his belt, and held a 5-4 lead in the second. One court down, McLachlan was nursing a 5-2 lead in the second after taking his first set, 6-2, against Greene. Both players served for the match at the same time, but McLachlan finished just seconds before Konigsfeldt did, and secured the final point for the Bears.
In the day's other first-round match, the Bulldogs came from behind to defeat No. 19 Minnesota (19-6), 4-3, and earn their 11th consecutive victory. Please visit CalBears.com for live scoring and streaming video of the second round.
