SEATTLE - The 10th-ranked California men's tennis team (12-6, 3-2 Pac-10) narrowly dropped a 4-3 decision to No. 22 Washington (15-8, 2-3) as the Golden Bears had their three-match winning streak snapped at Bill Quillian Stadium on Sat., Apr. 9. Cal earned the doubles point for the 10th time this season and posted two more points on singles victories by No. 96-ranked junior Nick Andrews and sophomore Christoffer Konigsfeldt.
The Huskies made the first move of the day as their No. 31-ranked duo of Kyle McMorrow and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan defeated the Bears' 22nd-ranked team of Andrews and Konigsfeldt , 8-3, at the top doubles court. Cal answered back, however, when sophomore Riki McLachlan and freshman Ben McLachlan got an 8-4 victory against Marton Bots and Daniel Schmidt at court three.
In the middle, seniors Jonathan Dahan and Pedro Zerbini were tangled in a tight match against the No. 69-ranked team of Martin Kildahl and Tobi Obenaus. The teams traded barbs throughout the entire match and found themselves in a tiebreaker. The Huskies served for the first point, but couldn't do much more against Dahan and Zerbini as the Bears ripped off the next seven points to put the doubles point in Cal's corner.
Just like the final doubles match, the rest of the dual was a back-and-forth battle. Washington struck first in singles matches and knotted the score at one-all when Bots took out senior Bozhidar Katsarov, 6-3, 6-2, at the bottom of the lineup. But the Bears had an answer and went ahead, 2-1, when Konigsfeldt completed his 6-1, 6-2 win over Schmidt at No. 4 singles.
The Huskies countered once more to tie the score at two-all with a win at the top court where No. 74 Nedunchezhiyan pulled out a three-set victory over No. 17 Zerbini. Nedunchezhiyan won the first set, 6-2, but Zerbini came through with a 6-2 win of his own in the second to force a third set. Nedunchezhiyan came on strong in the final stanza to take a 6-1 win for Washington's second point.
In another three-setter, No. 96-ranked Andrews pushed the Bears ahead, again, as he came back from dropping his first set, 7-5, to No. 85-ranked Kildahl at court three to win, 6-2, 6-2, going away. But the 3-2 lead didn't last long as the Huskies forced a final tie at three-all on a 7-5, 7-5 win by Obenaus at court five where he grinded out a hard-fought victory over Ben McLachlan.
With the final point resting on the result at court two, No. 68-ranked McMorrow eeked out a 7-6 win in the second set after falling, 6-2, in the first to No. 65-ranked sophomore Carlos Cueto. McMorrow came away with a 7-5 win in the tiebreaker to force a decisive third set. Both players went back and forth to a five-all tie before Cueto earned match-point first, but McMorrow came back to force a tiebreaker for the final point of the day. In the breaker, Cueto pushed McMorrow to the limit before the Husky claimed the final two points for an 8-6 upset win.
The Bears will receive a bye next weekend before they conclude the regular-season schedule with a dual at Stanford. Cal and Stanford renew their rivalry in the Big Slam at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium on Sat., Apr. 23, at 1 p.m. PT. Please visit CalBears.com for more information.
