BERKELEY - No. 96-ranked California men's tennis junior Nick Andrews had the clinching point in a 6-1 victory as the No. 10 Golden Bears (11-5, 2-1 Pac-10) defeated No. 29 San Diego (15-4, 1-1 WCC) on Tue., Apr. 5, at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Cal's final regular-season home dual celebrated the careers of seniors Jonathan Dahan, Zach Gilbert, Bozhidar Katsarov, and Pedro Zerbini. It was also a special day for the Bears as they honored a legend in Hall of Famer Jim McManus, who passed away earlier this year.
Cal got the festivities started by sweeping the Toreros on all three doubles courts. At the top spot, the No. 22-ranked team of Andrews and sophomore Christoffer Konigsfeldt earned their team-high 15th win as they took out Nikola Bubnic and Nils Schive, 8-3, to give the Bears a leg up. Minutes later, Dahan and Zerbini polished off Clarke Spinosa and Thibaut Visy, 8-2, at court two to seal the first point of the day for Cal.
At No. 3 doubles, freshman Ben McLachlan and sophomore Riki McLachlan defeated Abdullah Hashem and Dean Jackson, 8-4, to complete the three-court sweep.
San Diego got on the board to tie the match at one-all with the first win in singles matches. At court four, Visy took out Konigsfeldt, 6-1, 6-2. Cal responded immediately to take a 2-1 lead as No. 65-ranked sophomore Carlos Cueto earned a 6-2, 6-2 win over Bubnic at court two. Ben McLachlan tacked up a third point for the Bears on his 6-4, 6-1 win over Emilio Mora at court five.
At court three, No. 96-ranked Andrews upended No. 106 Spinosa, 6-2, 6-3, to seal the victory for the Bears. It was Andrews' 14th win of the year. With the match decided, Cal posted a fifth point on a 6-4, 6-4 win by Katsarov over Schive at court six. At the top court, No. 17 Zerbini and No. 35 Jackson split 6-3 sets with Zerbini winning the second, to force a match tiebreaker. Zerbini took a 9-4 lead, but Jackson threatened by claiming the next four points. Zerbini stood fast to wrap up the win, 10-8, for Cal's sixth point.
The Bears hit the road for a pair of key Pac-10 dual matches in the Pacific Northwest this weekend. Cal takes on No. 70 Oregon (10-8, 1-2 Pac-10) at the Student Tennis Center in Eugene, Ore., at 1 p.m. PT on Fri., Apr. 8, and then heads to Seattle for a dual against No. 22 Washington (14-7, 1-2) at the Nordstrom Tennis Center at 1 p.m. PT on Sat., Apr. 9.
