Championship Central | Tournament Draw
OJAI, Calif. - California's top-seeded and No. 1-ranked women's tennis doubles team of senior Mari Andersson and junior Jana Juricova earned two wins on the second day of the 2011 Pac-10 Championships to advance to the semifinal round. The Golden Bears also pushed a pair into the doubles invitational semifinal, and freshman Alice Duranteau forged a path to the singles invitational semis at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club on Fri., Apr. 29. All remaining matches will be played at Libbey Park.
Andersson and Juricova had little trouble getting out of the first round as they dispatched of Arizona State's duo of Hannah James and Sianna Simmons, 8-1. The Bears faced their first test as they drew USC's No. 77-ranked team of Cristala Andrews and Alison Ramos in the quarterfinal. Though the Trojans put up a fight, Andersson and Juricova came away with a 9-7 victory to advance. The win was their team-high 36th this year.
Andersson and Juricova will take on the No. 43-ranked team of Kristie Ahn and Nicole Gibbs of Stanford in a 3:30 p.m. PT match at Libbey Park on Sat., Apr. 30.
In another first-round match, Cal's 27th-ranked team of sophomore Annie Goransson and freshman Anett Schutting was turned away, 8-5, by Stanford's pair of Carolyn McVeigh and Stacey Tan.
In the doubles invitational quarterfinal, the third-seeded team of sophomore Tayler Davis and Duranteau struggled and fell, 8-4, to Stanford's team of Mallory Burdette and Natalie Dillon. Juniors Stephany Chang and Catalina Visico advanced to the invitational semifinal after their opponents--Jane Huh and Susan McRann of Arizona--retired due to injury. Chang and Visico will draw UCLA's second-seeded tandem of Courtney Dolehide and Nina Pantic in a 2 p.m. semifinal match at Libbey Park.
After winning her first set, 6-3, Duranteau gave up a 6-1 win to Huh in the singles invitational quarterfinal before she came through with a 6-0 win in the third set to advance. Duranteau will take on Andjela Kankaras of Washington State at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. For complete draws, and results, please visit www.Pac-10.org.
