Championship Central | Tournament Draw
OJAI, Calif. - No. 116-ranked California men's tennis junior Nick Andrews earned a pair of victories on the first day of the 2011 Pac-10 Men's Tennis Championships to advance to the singles quarterfinals at Libbey Park on Thur., Apr. 28. The Golden Bears will open doubles play at 9 a.m. PT on Fri., Apr. 29.
Andrews defeated Arizona's Geoff Embry, 6-0, 6-3, in the first round before he posted an upset victory over third-seeded and No. 44-ranked Kyle McMorrow of Washington in three sets. Andrews edged McMorrow, 7-4, for the first set in the tiebreaker, but fell in the second, 6-4, before he came through with a 7-5 win in the third.
Cal's three other entries in the singles championship each fell in the first round. Sophomore Riki McLachlan went up against fifth-seeded and No. 62-ranked Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and pushed the Washington senior to three sets, but lost, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. Sophomore Christoffer Konigsfeldt drew Oregon's Alex Rovello in the opening round. After he dropped the first set, 6-1, Konigsfeldt fought Rovello to earn a tiebreaker in the second, but was edged, 7-4. Senior Jonathan Dahan fell, 6-2, 6-3, to No. 77-ranked Clay Thompson of UCLA.
In the singles invitational, junior Tommie Murphy lost, 6-3, 6-2, to Max Manthou of Washington, and junior Sky Lovill fell, 6-3, 6-4, to UCLA's Warren Hardie. Senior Bozhidar Katsarov went three sets before Stanford's Walker Kehrer won, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
