Bears Complete First Day at Pac-10 Championships

OJAI, Calif. - The California women's tennis team completed the first day of play at the 2011 Pac-10 Championships with four players advancing to the singles round of 16 on Thur., Apr. 28, at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club. The Golden Bears sent four players into the second round headlined by freshman Anett Schutting's stunning win over second-seeded and No. 14-ranked Venise Chan of Washington.

As the sixth-seeded singles player in the tournament, No. 21-ranked senior Mari Andersson made short work of Washington State's Elisabeth Fournier, 6-1, 6-4, in the first round, but was upset by No. 60 Stacey Tan of Stanford, 6-3, 6-4, in the round of 16.

Cal's sophomores also notched first-round victories, but fell in the second round. Eighth-seeded and No. 54-ranked Tayler Davis defeated Arizona's Lacey Smyth in three sets, 6-7, 6-4, 7-5, with an 8-6 win in the first-set tiebreaker, before she fell to No. 61-ranked McCall Jones of UCLA, 7-5, 6-2, in the second round. No. 85 Annie Goransson posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over Natasha Marks of Arizona before she was defeated, 6-2, 7-5, by fifth-seeded and No. 20-ranked Mallory Burdette of Stanford.

Schutting drew No. 99-ranked Kaitlyn Christian of USC in the second round, but couldn't keep pace and was turned away, 6-3, 6-0. Senior Marina Cossou went up against seventh-seeded No. 25 Kristie Ahn of Stanford in the first round, but was edged, 7-5, 6-3.

In the singles invitational round of 32, junior Stephany Chang fell, 6-3, 7-6, to Stanford's Amelia Herring, after she was edged for the second set, 8-6. Junior Catalina Visico dropped a 6-2, 6-1 match to Andjela Kankaras of Washington State. After receiving a first-round bye, fourth-seeded freshman Alice Duranteau advanced to the quarterfinal with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Stanford's Elizabeth Ecker in the round of 16.

The Bears will resume play with doubles matches at 8 a.m. PT on Fri., Apr. 29, at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club. Duranteau will play her singles quarterfinal match at noon against Jane Huh of Arizona. For complete draws, photos, and results, please visit www.Pac-10.org.
