STANFORD, Calif. - The 14th-ranked California men's tennis team (12-7, 3-3 Pac-10) fell, 4-3, to No. 8 Stanford (18-5, 5-1) in the Big Slam at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium on Sat. Apr. 23. The Golden Bears finish the season in a three-way tie with UCLA and Washington for third place in the Pac-10 as the Cardinal ran its winning streak to 10 matches on Stanford's Senior Day.
Cal found itself down a point after the Cardinal earned victories on all three doubles courts. Stanford's team of Jamin Ball and Alex Clayton came up with an 8-5 win over freshman Ben McLachlan and sophomore Riki McLachlan at court three to open the day. At the top court, the Cardinal's third-ranked duo of Bradley Klahn and Ryan Thacher secured the doubles point on an 8-3 win against the Bears' No. 23-ranked tandem of junior Nick Andrews and sophomore Christoffer Konigsfeldt.
The Cardinal went up, 2-0, on a 6-1, 6-2 win by ninth-ranked Klahn as he took out No. 20-ranked senior Pedro Zerbini at the top singles court. Cal got on the board off a win at court six when senior Bozhidar Katsarov claimed a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Ball, but Stanford pressed to get a 3-1 lead when No. 66 Clayton won, 6-1, 6-3, against No. 104-ranked Andrews at court three.
Stanford's fourth point came on a hard-fought victory by Kandath at court five. Kandath had to fight off Ben McLachlan to edge the first-year Bear for the 7-5, 6-4 win. With the match decided, the final two matches on court went three sets after the first two sets in each bout went to tiebreakers. At court four, Konigsfeldt dropped his first set to Denis Lin, 7-3, in the tiebreaker, but fought Lin to a second tiebreaker where he won, 7-0. In the match-tiebreaker, Konigsfeldt carried his momentum to a 10-4 win to make the score, 4-2.
At court two, No. 75-ranked Cueto won his first set with an 8-6 score in the tiebreaker, but had the script flipped on him in the second as he fell, 7-5, in the tiebreaker. The match-tiebreaker was just as tight, but Cueto came away with an 11-9 win to make the final score, 4-3, for the Cardinal.
The Bears head down to Ojai, Calif., for the 2011 Pacific-10 Tennis Championships next weekend (Apr. 28-May 1) at the Ojai Valley Tennis Club. Please visit CalBears.com or Pac-10.org for more information.
