BERKELEY - Top-ranked California women's tennis junior Jana Juricova avenged the last of her three singles losses this season as she took out No. 3 Hilary Barte of Stanford in three sets, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, to maintain a perfect 19-0 mark in dual matches despite the ninth-ranked Golden Bears' (16-6, 6-2 Pac-10) 5-2 loss to No. 2 Stanford (23-0, 8-0) on Senior Day at the Hellman Tennis Complex on Sat., Apr. 16. Cal will finish the season in third place in the conference and the Cardinal wins its 23rd Pac-10 title on its 42nd consecutive dual victory.
The Cardinal fought off a hard charge by the Bears to claim the first point of the day with bookend wins in doubles. Cal's 34th-ranked team of sophomore Annie Goransson and freshman Anett Schutting came up with an 8-2 win at court two over the No. 37-ranked duo of Kristie Ahn and Nicole Gibbs to give the Bears a leg up, but one minute later, Stanford evened the race to the doubles point as Carolyn McVeigh and Stacey Tan took out senior Marina Cossou and sophomore Tayler Davis, 8-3, at court three.
In a one-two matchup at the top court, the Cardinal's No. 2-ranked team of Barte and Mallory Burdette took a 6-3 lead over Cal's top-ranked duo of senior Mari Andersson and Juricova, but the Bears fought and held serve for a six-all tie. Stanford pressed, again, and took a 7-6 lead on serve, and forced Cal into deuce as Juricova served to tie the match once more. Forced into deuce a last time, Stanford's tandem came up with the winner for an 8-6 victory and the first point of the day.
The Cardinal went ahead, 2-0, in the match when No. 55-ranked Tan defeated Cossou, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5 singles, and took a 3-0 lead on a 6-3, 6-0 win by No. 22 Ahn over No. 71-ranked Goransson at court four.
The Bears got on the board with a win at court two as No. 25 Andersson upended No. 19 Burdette in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, but Stanford clinched the victory on No. 15 Gibbs' 6-2, 6-4 win over Schutting at court three. The Cardinal added one more point on a win at court six where Li took out No. 48-ranked Davis, 6-3, 6-4, but Juricova had the last laugh as she came back from dropping her first set, 6-1, to win, 6-3, 6-4, in three.
Cal is back in action as hosts of the USTA Junior All-Star Team in an exhibition dual match on Thur., Apr. 21, at 1:30 p.m. PT. The match will begin with four doubles matches at Hellman Tennis Complex. Then, six singles matches will take place at Hellman Tennis Complex and two more will be contested at the Channing Tennis Courts. Please visit CalBears.com for more details.
