TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 6 California men's tennis team (10-5, 2-1 Pac-10) earned a 4-3 victory over No. 56 Arizona (8-10, 0-3) on Fri., Apr. 1, at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center. The Golden Bears received the clinching point on a three-set win by senior Bozhidar Katsarov, who defeated Mario Urquidi on court six, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.
The Bears nabbed the doubles point with bookend wins, early on. Down at court three, sophomore Riki McLachlan and freshman Ben McLachlan came up with an 8-1 win over Andre Vidaller and Jason Zafiros. At the top court, Cal's No. 22-ranked duo of junior Nick Andrews and sophomore Christoffer Konigsfeldt put the point away with an 8-5 win over Geoff Embry and Giacomo Miccini. With the point decided, a six-all tie at court two pushed junior Tommie Murphy and senior Pedro Zerbini into a tiebreaker against Andres Carrasco and Kieren Thompson. The Wildcats took the win by posting a 7-4 score in the breaker.
No. 17-ranked Zerbini gave Cal a 2-0 lead in the match on his 6-2, 6-3 win over Jay Goldman at the top court, but Arizona answered back to get on the board with a 6-4, 6-4 win on court four where Miccini defeated Konigsfeldt. Cal went ahead, 3-1, when No. 96-ranked Andrews put away Zafiros with a 7-5, 7-5 score.
Still, the Wildcats fought back and climbed within 3-2 as Vidaller defeated Ben McLachlan at court five, 7-6, 6-1, with a 7-3 score in the first-set tiebreaker. Katsarov clinched the win for the Bears next, on his three-set victory over Urquidi at court six. With the match decided, No. 111 Carrasco came back to defeat No. 65-ranked sophomore Carlos Cueto, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, at court two.
The Bears are back in action on Tuesday (Apr. 5) as they host No. 26 San Diego in the final regular-season home dual match of the year. Cal will celebrate its seniors--Jonathan Dahan, Zach Gilbert, Bozhidar Katsarov, and Pedro Zerbini--in festivities preceding the 1:30 p.m. PT start time at Hellman Tennis Complex.
