BERKELEY - No. 2-ranked California women's tennis junior Jana Juricova won her 17th consecutive singles match in a short-lived 44-minute bout against Arizona's Natasha Marks at the top court to help the Golden Bears (13-5, 4-1 Pac-10) secure a 7-0 win over No. 30 Arizona (15-5, 2-2) on Fri., Apr. 1, at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
The Bears seized control of the match with a win at No. 2 doubles as their 25th-ranked duo of sophomore Annie Goransson and freshman Anett Schutting completed an 8-4 win over Susan McRann and Kim Stubbe. Because Arizona forfeited the result on court three due to an incomplete lineup, the lone victory was all Cal needed to earn the doubles point. At the top court, the Bears' third-ranked tandem of senior Mari Andersson and Juricova came up with an 8-4 win against Marks and Lacey Smyth to complete the sweep.
Shorthanded, Arizona went down, 2-0, as it forfeited the singles match on court six. Juricova came off first with her 6-0, 6-0 win over Marks to put the Bears on top, 3-0. No. 80 Goransson claimed her team-leading 30th singles victory when she defeated McRann at court four, 6-1, 6-2, to clinch the match for Cal.
With the match decided, the Bears added three more points to finish off the Cats, 7-0. First, No. 18-ranked Andersson took out Smyth, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 2 singles for her 25th victory of the year. Senior Marina Cossou completed a 6-2, 6-4 win over Jane Huh at court five to push the Bears to a 6-0 lead. Cal got its seventh point from Schutting on a 6-3, 6-4 win over Stubbe at court three.
The Bears are back in action against No. 13 Arizona State (13-3, 3-0 Pac-10) on Sat., Apr. 2, at noon PT.
