BERKELEY - The sixth-ranked California women's tennis team (10-2, 2-0 Pac-10) had its five-match winning streak snapped as No. 2 Stanford (13-0, 2-0) edged the Golden Bears, 5-2, at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium on Sat., Mar. 5. Because it was the first of two regular-season duals, the team result won't count towards Pac-10 standings.
Cal had its chances to seize the doubles point, but the Cardinal held on to claim wins at courts two and three to make the first move of the day. The Bears' sophomore tandem of Tayler Davis and Annie Goransson fell first, 8-4, to Stanford's freshman pair of Kristie Ahn and Nicole Gibbs at court two. In a close battle, Carolyn McVeigh and Stacey Tan came up with an 8-6 win over senior Marina Cossou and freshman Anett Schutting at court three for the point.
At the top court, Cal's fourth-ranked team of senior Mari Andersson and junior Jana Juricova avenged one of their two losses this season by defeating the No. 2-ranked team of Hilary Barte and Mallory Burdette, 8-6. The victory was the 15th in a row for the Bears and pushed their record to 28-2 overall.
Stanford created a 2-0 lead in the match when No. 20-ranked Gibbs dispatched No. 38-ranked Davis, 6-1, 6-0, at the third singles court. The Cardinal earned a 3-0 score when McVeigh turned in a 6-2, 6-0 win over freshman Alice Duranteau at court six. No. 13-ranked Ahn had the clinching point from court four as her 6-3, 6-1 win over No. 62-ranked Goransson halted a 14-match winning streak for the second-year Bear.
The Bears got on the board with a win at the top court where No. 4 Juricova forced No. 1-ranked Barte to retire after winning the first set, 7-6, with a 7-4 score in the tiebreaker. The Cardinal added one more point in a close match at court five where No. 46 Tan came back from dropping her first set, 6-2, to win 7-6 with a 7-5 score in the second-set tiebreaker and a 10-4 score in the match-tiebreak. No. 41-ranked Andersson gave Cal one more point on her three-set win against No. 24 Burdette at court two. Andersson won the first set, 6-3, before Burdette responded to force a third set with a 7-5 score in the second. Andersson came through with a 10-7 finish in the match tiebreaker. Both Juricova (11-0, 21-3 overall) and Anderrson (12-0, 20-5 overall) remain undefeated in dual singles and doubles matches this season.
Cal had its chances to snap the Cardinal's home winning streak, which reached 172 matches, but will have its chance at revenge on April 16 when Stanford visits Hellman Tennis Complex for the regular-season finale. For now, the Bears remain on the road and will face a No. 3-ranked Duke squad at the Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe, Ariz., on Fri., Mar. 11. Then, Cal and No. 35 Arizona State will face off in a non-league dual at noon PT on Sat., Mar. 12. Please visit CalBears.com for more information.
