BERKELEY - The sixth-ranked California women's tennis team (10-1, 2-0 Pac-10) secured a 6-1 win over No. 31 Sacramento State (6-2, 1-0 Big Sky) at the Hellman Tennis Complex on Friday, Mar. 4. The Golden Bears earned their fifth straight victory when No. 62-ranked sophomore Annie Goransson defeated Sophie Lohscheidt, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 4 singles.
The Bears got a big win at the top doubles court to start their day from their fourth-ranked duo of senior Mari Andersson and junior Jana Juricova as they defeated the No. 45-ranked team of Rebeca Delgado and Tatsiana Kapshai, 8-2. It was the 14th consecutive win for the Cal pair. Down on court three, senior Marina Cossou and freshman Anett Schutting broke the Sac State serve to complete an 8-6 win over the Hornets' freshman duo of Katharina Knoebl and Loscheidt to clinch the doubles point for Cal.
With the point in hand, the Bears tacked on a third doubles victory from court two as their sophomore tandem of Tayler Davis and Goransson got a 7-5 win in the tiebreaker to take out Clarisse Baca and Maria Meliuk.
At the second singles court, No. 41-ranked Andersson did a number on Baca to get off the court in 56 minutes with a 6-0, 6-2 victory; her 11th straight. No. 4-ranked Juricova pushed the Bears ahead, 3-0, with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Delgado at the top court; her 10th straight victory and 20th overall. Goransson had the clinching point in her pocket and delivered with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Lohscheidt at court four. The win is Goransson's 14th in a row and her team-high 27th overall.
Sacramento State got on the board next, to make the score, 4-1, as Milica Zivanovic defeated junior Stephany Chang, 7-5, 6-2, at the sixth court. No. 38-ranked Davis tacked up a fifth point for the Bears on her 6-4, 6-3 win over Meliuk at court three before Schutting came through with four straight games to complete a 6-3, 6-4 win over Knoebl at court five.
